March 5, 1989
From the Hersheypark Arena in Hershey, PA
Your hosts are Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon
In action this week are the Rockers and Big John Studd
The Rockers vs. Barry Horowitz & Gino Carabello
The Rockers hit Horowitz with a double backbreaker as Heenan makes fun of the Rockers. Horowitz cheap shots Michaels but the Rockers quickly regain control. Carabello tags and they hit him with a double leg sweep and stay in control until Michaels puts him away with a flying crossbody (3:52).
Thoughts: The Rockers are just crazy over with the crowds at this point but the company does not seem too keen on giving them much of a push.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. He runs down the entire card for WrestleMania V.
Mr. Perfect vs. David Stoudemire
Perfect toys with Stoudemire as we hear from the Blue Blazer in an insert promo as he tells Perfect he will have to change his name after WrestleMania V. Perfect stays in control as the announcers talk about WrestleMania then Stoudemire catches Perfect with a clothesline but runs into a knee. Perfect then hits a missile dropkick and puts Stoudemire away with the Perfect Plex (2:26).
Thoughts: A win for Perfect as he is facing the Blue Blazer in one of the least hyped matches at WrestleMania.
Chris Duffy & Mitch Carey vs. Big John Studd
Studd slingshots them to the floor to start. He manhandles these two as we hear from him in an insert promo saying he will not be pushed around as a referee. Studd stays in control until he puts Duffy away with a bearhug (2:36).
Thoughts: The Studd push really is not working. He’s also slower than ever in the ring.
Sean Mooney in the same Event Center segment we saw on Superstars to hype the 3/11/89 Nashville house show.
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine & Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Mario Mancini & ???
Valentine beats on the unknown guy as we hear from the Hart Foundation in an insert promo as they promise to wipe the floor with Valentine & Honky at WrestleMania. Mancini tags in and Honky rakes his eyes and puts him away with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll (1:51).
Thoughts: Basic hype for the tag match at WrestleMania.
Randy Savage’s promo that he cut on Hogan from “Superstars” is shown.
Hercules vs. Iron Mike Sharpe
Hercules dodges an attack in the corner then fires away. Sharpe then catches Hercules with a knee smash and hammers away. We hear from King Haku in an insert promo as he tells Hercules he will bow to him at WrestleMania. It was awful. Back to the match as Hercules comes back with a knee lift then puts Sharpe away with the backbreaker submission (1:48).
Thoughts: Hercules is also feuding with Heenan and his family, making that three former wrestlers who are out to get vengeance on their ex-manager and his men. Its really overkill at this point.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Ted DiBiase & Virgil to the interview platform. He more or less cuts the same promo as he did on the Brother Love Show from “Superstars of Wrestling” before he unveils the Million Dollar Belt after opening his jacket. Virgil then holds it up as DiBiase talks about how much gold and diamonds it is made from. Virgil nearly decks Okerlund as he tries to inspect it then DiBiase says no one else in the world is worthy of wearing the belt or even beating him for it and Brutus Beefcake must be an idiot to think he can beat him for it at WrestleMania V. Odd they had a belt reveal segment that was exclusive to Challenge.
The WrestleMania V report from Superstars airs, including the promo from Hulk Hogan.
Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Gary Starr & Nelson Veilleux
The Barbarian tosses Veilleux around as the Powers of Pain are firmly in control. We hear from the Powers of Pain Fuji in an insert promo as they talk about beating Demolition for the Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania. Starr tags in and gets destroyed until the Powers of Pain put him out of misery with the Doomsday Device (2:22).
Thoughts: More hype for the Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania.
Next week, we will hear more comments from Hogan and Savage. Also in action will be the Twin Towers, Tito Santana, Bad News Brown, and the Ultimate Warrior.
Final Thoughts: Really just more of the same WrestleMania hype and if you already saw Superstars then there was no point of watching this show.
