WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 4th, 1989

March 4, 1989

From the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

This week, we will see the unveiling of the Million Dollar Belt. Plus, comments from Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan.

Demolition vs. Barry Horowitz & Barry Hardy

Smash knocks down Horowitz as the announcers discuss the Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania. We then hear from the Powers of Pain and Mr. Fuji in an insert promo as they run down Demolition while Smash is now beating on Hardy. Demolition stays in control until they put Hardy away with the Decapitation (2:39).

Thoughts: More hype for the Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania. What more can be done to hype up this match at this point?

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This is about WrestleMania V as we get the rest of the matches added to the show such as Mr. Perfect vs. Blue Blazer, Bobby Heenan vs. Red Rooster, Rockers vs. Twin Towers, Ted DiBiase vs. Brutus Beefcake, and the Hart Foundation vs. Honky Tonk Man & Greg Valentine. Plus, the return of “Piper’s Pit” with guests Brother Love and Morton Downey Jr. The news of Piper returning is certainly huge as the rest of the matches announced aren’t really all that major.

“Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Dale London

Rude beats on London then tosses him to the floor. Rude rolls London back inside as we see him in an insert promo proclaiming himself as the sexiest man alive and the new Intercontinental Champion then he hits the Rude Awakening for the win (1:00). After the match, Rude gives a girl the Rude Awakening.

Thoughts: They put Rude over strong as he is very confident he can beat the Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear more promos to hype up the upcoming house show in Nashville. The Big Bossman cuts a promo on the Ultimate Warrior as his voice keeps cracking. It was hilarious. The Rockers then promise to take care of the Brainbusters once and for all.

Hart Foundation vs. Tony Durante & Gary Wolfe

Durante & Wolfe would later become the Pitbulls in ECW. The Hart Foundation take control as we hear from Jimmy Hart, Greg Valentine, and the Honky Tonk Man in an insert promo as Jimmy tells the Hart Foundation if they want their contracts back they have to win at WrestleMania. Back to the match as the Hart Foundation beat down Wolfe then hit him with the Hart Attack for the win (2:41).

Thoughts: The Hart Foundation are quite over still but their feud with Jimmy Hart is getting tiresome. Its almost been a year long at this point.

An ad for WrestleMania V airs.

Brooklyn Brawler w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Mario Mancini

Brawler attacks Mancini as the announcers talk about Heenan accepting the Red Rooster’s challenge for a match at WrestleMania. Mancini comes back with a crossbody and a small package for nearfalls but ends up getting dumped outside. We hear from Brawler in an insert promo as he tells Rooster that Heenan will beat him at WrestleMania. Brawler now chokes out Mancini on the mat before putting him away with the Sidewalk Smash (2:01). After the match, Brawler tosses Mancini to the floor.

Thoughts: Now that Heenan is going to fight Rooster instead, the Brawler seems useless at this point.

Randy Savage is now talking about the promises Hulk Hogan broke, such as saying Elizabeth would never be put in a dangerous position as we see when the Big Bossman cuffed Elizabeth. Savage said he only comes down to his matches when it is absolutely necessary but that Hogan plays by different rules as he needs to “grandstand and hotdog” as we see a clip of Hogan running in to save Savage from the Twin Towers. He then talks about Hogan lying on the “Brother Love Show” when he talked about loving Elizabeth as Savage tells Hogan he hates his guts and they will be left all over the mat after their match at WrestleMania V. God damn Savage was awesome here.

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Chris Duffy

Beefcake is shown in an insert promo as he runs down Ted DiBiase to hype up their match at WrestleMania. Beefcake beats Duffy down then puts him away with the sleeper (2:15). After the match, Beefcake gives Duffy a haircut then sprays the dollar sign on his back.

Thoughts: Beefcake is really getting over huge with the crowds as they build up his match against DiBiase at WrestleMania.

Brother Love Show with guests Ted DiBiase & Virgil. DiBiase talks about how the WWF was embarrassed when he bought the World Heavyweight Title so they stole it back. However, they ended up doing him a favor as that belt was not worthy of being around his waist as he unveils his Million Dollar Belt, made out of pure gold and the highest quality of diamonds. DiBiase tried hard here but he really has felt less important ever since SummerSlam. He just does not feel like a top heel. He failed to by himself the title then failed to buy himself a win at the Royal Rumble.

WrestleMania V Report with Gene Okerlund. We now hear from Hulk Hogan. He tells Savage about letting everything slide to make everything smooth out but he was not doing to let them both get in the danger zone like what happened to himself at the hands of the Big Bossman. He then talks about seeing the footage of Savage almost taking him out from behind with the nightstick and said he meant every word he said when he loved Savage as a brother and loved Elizabeth like a sister. Hogan said his little Hulksters gave him everything and courage to beat all odds but he threw it all away due to jealously. He then tells Savage that Hulkamania will run wild on him and he will be the new World Champion. Another good Hogan promo. After Hogan is done we hear Run DMC talk about the “WrestleMania Rap” then Okerlund reads a telegram from Roddy Piper talking about returning to WrestleMania V with a live “Piper’s Pit.” We then hear from Morton Downey Jr. and Brother Love as they run each other down. They are now starting to hype the celebrity appearances on the show.

Twin Towers w/ Slick vs. ???

The Towers destroy these two guys whose names we never got as the Rockers are in an insert promo, promising to chop down the Towers at WrestleMania. The Towers stay in control until Akeem puts one of these guys away with a splash (2:03).

Thoughts: Just a quick match to put over the Towers as they face off against the Rockers at WrestleMania.

Mooney is back in the Event Center as he talks about the Nashville show. Big John Studd promises to manhandle Akeem and DiBiase vows to beat Tito Santana.

Next week, we will get more comments from Hogan and Savage. In action will be the Blue Blazer, Dino Bravo, Bushwhackers, and Jake Roberts.

Final Thoughts: We now know the rest of the WrestleMania card and the celebrities that will be appearing. The Hogan/Savage feud remains awesome as that match is hot heading into the PPV but I cannot say that for the rest of the card.
