WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 15th, 1989

January 15th, 1989

From the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL

Your hosts are Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon

Tonight, we will see the Tito Santana vs. Red Rooster and Koko B. Ware vs. Mr. Perfect matches from “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Also in action are Ted DiBiase and Bad News Brown.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Joe Cruz

DiBiase beats on Cruz and tosses him outside while the announcers talk about the possibility of DiBiase buying the #30 spot in the Royal Rumble match. We get an insert promo from DiBiase as he promises to have a championship in 1989 before putting Cruz away with the Million Dollar Dream (1:34).

Thoughts: More continuation of the angle where DiBiase is looking to buy the #30 spot for the Royal Rumble match.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s focus is on what happened after the Hulk Hogan vs. Akeem match from SNME and the interviews with both the Twin Towers and the Mega Powers afterwards

Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. George Terrell & Scott Casey

Tully starts off by slapping Casey, who the fires away. Casey misses a charge in the corner as we hear from the Rockers in an insert promo as they promise to get their hands on the Brainbusters. Terrell is in now as Tully yanks him to the floor. Arn roughs up Terrell on the outside then tags in as the Brainbusters put Terrell away with the spike pliedriver behind the referee’s back as Gorilla notes the move is outlawed in most places (1:44).

Thoughts: Fun to see the Brainbusters do their antics on TV as their feud with the Rockers is starting to heat up.

We see the Koko B. Ware vs. Mr. Perfect match from SNME that saw Mr. Perfect win with the Perfect Plex.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear from Ronnie Garvin and the Bushwhackers as they hype up the Royal Rumble match. We then hear from King Haku and Bobby Heenan, who tells Harley Race he has to step up and win if he wants to reclaim his crown.

We see the Honky Tonk Man & Greg Valentine vs. Hart Foundation match from the 1/7/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling” where Honky knocked out Bret Hart with his guitar.

Mooney is back in the Event Center where Mr. Perfect and Randy Savage hype up the Royal Rumble match.

Bill Mulkey vs. Bad News Brown

Heenan is back on commentary. Bad News attacks Mulkey before the bell and stays on the attack. We hear from Bad News in an insert promo who puts over surviving in Harlem and how he can win the Rumble match then calls out Savage. Bad News continues to beat on Mulkey until finishing him off with the Ghetto Blaster (1:44). After the match, Bad News pulls Mulkey up by the tights then tosses him to the floor.

Thoughts: Bad News was put over as a major threat here to continue is feud with Savage.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Big John Studd to the interview platform. He tells us about how he never quit being a wrestler and has been training and is not only bigger but also smarter as he no longer aligns with Bobby Heenan. He then promises to be the last man in the ring and that he will take the Heenan Family down one-by-one as he is bigger, stronger, and healthier. Lame stuff by Studd as his return as a babyface would ultimately flop.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Now, we see Tito Santana defeat the Red Rooster from SNME. Rooster attacked Heenan after the match to cement his face turn as he finally snapped due to Heenan’s abuse.

Mooney is back in the Event Center as we hear from Jake Roberts and Demolition as they hype up the Royal Rumble match. We then hear from Jim Duggan as he hypes up his six-man tag match at the Royal Rumble.

Next week in action will be the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Blue Blazer, Mr. Perfect, Jake Roberts, and the Twin Towers.

Final Thoughts: This was a good show if you missed SNME or the Hart Foundation vs. Honky & Valentine match from last week but other than that it was just last minute hype for the PPV.
