WWF Superstars of Wrestling – January 14th, 1989

January 14, 1989

From the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, FL

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

This week we will see clips from the Hulk Hogan vs. Akeem and Brutus Beefcake vs. Ron Bass matches from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and the Tito Santana vs. Red Rooster match from that show in its entirety. Plus, the Rockers are in action and we will get the Royal Rumble Report and more!

Rockers vs. Trent Knight & Rusty Riddle

The Rockers work over Riddle to start. Michaels fights out of the opposing corner as then tags out as Jannetty catches Knight with an inverted atomic drop. The Rockers stay in control as we hear from Bobby Heenan and the Brainbusters in an insert promo as they call out the Rockers, who then put Knight away after Michaels put Knight on his shoulders as Jannetty came off the top with a back elbow smash (2:16).

Thoughts: Decent action from the Rockers as they continue to push their feud against the Brainbusters.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on the Hogan vs. Akeem match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” We see clips of that match and the interview with Savage & Hogan afterwards in which they claimed to be on the same page.

King Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Jose Luis Rivera

We hear from Harley Race in an insert as he promises to prove Haku that he is the real king. Rivera lands a few shots and a dropkick but gets caught with a clothesline then Haku puts him away with a diving headbutt (1:28).

Thoughts: Again, the Haku/Race feud has gone nowhere because its only been built up by insert promos.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear from the Powers of Pain, Rick Martel, and Bad News Brown as they hype up the Royal Rumble match. After that, Rockin’ Robin tells Judy Martin that in each box of cracker jacks is always a little surprise. Poor Robin was given equally shitty promo material like her brother, Sam Houston. And, the Women’s Division was never even featured on TV so this match had very little fanfare heading into the Rumble.

The Tito Santana vs. Red Rooster match from SNME is shown. This is when Tito won and Rooster finally snapped and attacked Heenan due to the latter’s constant abuse.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. We hear from Andre the Giant w/ Bobby Heenan and Hogan w/ Elizabeth as they hype up the Royal Rumble match. Interesting that Savage was not with Hogan and Elizabeth there.

Jose Estrada vs. Ultimate Warrior

Warrior no-sells a few shots and takes down Estrada as he is still wearing the Intercontinental Title. Warrior tosses Estrada back in the ring as Rick Rude is in an insert promo telling Warrior he will find out what all the ladies know, which is that he has the finest body. Warrior clotheslines Estrada then puts him away with the press slam/splash combo (1:50).

Thoughts: They put over the Warrior heading into his posedown at the Royal Rumble.

Brother Love Show with guests Jimmy Hart, Honky Tonk Man & Greg Valentine. Brother Love congratulates Jimmy for the downfall of the Hart Foundation as they gloat about knocking out Bret Hart with the guitar. Not much to this other than the fact Hart will now have two teams to get revenge on the Hart Foundation.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund airs. He tells us the numbers for the Royal Rumble match will be drawn just before the show.

The same Bushwhackers in New York vignette is shown.

Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Omar Atlas

Duggan is shown in an insert promo as he promises Bravo a fight at the Royal Rumble. Atlas lands a few shots but Bravo blocks a monkey flip and hits an inverted atomic drop then shortly after that gets the win with a side slam (1:28).

Thoughts: More hype for the Bravo/Duggan feud.

Final Thoughts: This was mostly last minute hype for the Rumble. They did establish both Honky & Valentine along with the Rougeaus will be going after the Hart Foundation but other than that it was just pushing the same feuds as before. After the Rumble, the shows would focus more on feuds.
