WWF Superstars of Wrestling – December 10th, 1988

December 3, 1988

From the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week will be Ted DiBiase, Jake Roberts, and the featured match between the Rockers and the Brainbusters. Plus, the Brother Love Show segment from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” with guest Hulk Hogan.

Jake Roberts vs. Black Knight

The Black Knight beats on Jake to start. Jake reverses an Irish whip and takes control as we see an insert promo from Bobby Heenan, claiming that Andre the Giant is not afraid of snakes and that he will not be responsible for what Jake does to him. Jake then taunts the Black Knight and shortly after that puts him away with the DDT (2:37). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of the Black Knight.

Thoughts: The Jake/Andre angle remains one of the top TV angles in the company.

We see the Brother Love segment from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” with guest Hulk Hogan.

Frankie Valdez vs. Bad News Brown

Bad News immediately attacks Valdez and stays in control. Bad News is then in an insert promo telling Randy Savage that lifting his suspension will be the last decision he will ever make. Bad News catches Valdez with a boot then hits the Ghetto Blaster for the win (1:58).

Thoughts: A quick win to put over Bad News for his house show matches for the World Heavyweight Title.

Demolition is shown as they call out the Powers of Pain for being “puppets” that are led around by Mr. Fuji as they hype up their feud.

Red Rooster w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Scott Casey

Rooster gets the best of Casey as we hear him in an insert promo, thanking Heenan for why he is undefeated and that they will be together for ever. Casey hits Rooster with a hip toss then Heenan orders Rooster out and yells at him. Back inside, Rooster blocks a sunset flip then beats on Casey until putting him away with the Cock of the Walk (2:33).

Thoughts: As soon as you heard Rooster stay that he would be with Heenan forever, you knew a split was coming soon. The Rooster gimmick is just failing as no one cares about him at all.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear from Andre the Giant and Bobby Heenan, who attempts to convince us that his client is not afraid of snakes. Now, we hear from Koko B. Ware as he talks about climbing up the ladder of success.

Gene Okerlund is on location to meet the Bushwhackers, who were hiding under the leaves in the woods and scare Okerlund to the point here falls down. The Bushwhackers then scream over each other as they bury Okerlund in leaves.

The Rockers and Brainbusters come out for their scheduled match. However, Arn trips Shawn from the outside before entering the ring as Marty flies out with a tope and then all four men start brawling. They continue to brawl around ringside as Heenan gets out of the way for his own safety. Several referees are out and briefly separate them but the Rockers chase after the Brainbusters in the aisle as they brawl all the way to the back. A great way to kick off one of the most exciting in-ring tag team feuds of the 1980’s.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on the WWF Women’s Championship and how Rockin Robin defeated Sensational Sherri for the title in France as we see a clip of the finish. The match was featured on “Prime Time Wrestling.” We then hear from Robin as she claims to be here to stay before calling out Sherri. One of the rare occasions they actually promoted the women in this time period.

An ad for the Royal Rumble airs. It starts at 4pm EST on PPV.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. “Leaping” Lanny Poffo

DiBiase tries to attack Poffo after his poem but gets hit with a dropkick. However, DiBiase pulls up on a second dropkick attempt then beats on Poffo as he yells at the crowd. DiBiase then stays in control until he puts Poffo away with the Million Dollar Dream (1:50). After the match, DiBiase stuffs a $100 bill in Poffo’s mouth.

Thoughts: The announcers focused on DiBiase’s feud with Hercules here.

Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear Beefcake call out Ron Bass and the Honky Tonk Man telling us he will not turn down any opponent.

Sam Houston & Stefan Diablo vs. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers

Houston & Diablo get their own entrance, as Diablo appears out of breath trying to keep up with Houston down the aisle. Houston and Jacques knock each other down to start. The Rougeaus hug each other then Houston dropkicks Jacques after a reversal sequence. DeLeon tags as the Rougeaus and Hart are shown in an insert promo as they love mention but felt the parade and key to the city could have been bigger. The Rougeaus work over DeLeon until putting him away with the Rougeau Bomb (3:37).

Thoughts: Houston looked really good in this match but sadly he was getting phased out of the company. Most of this was putting over the story of the Rougeaus officially moving to Memphis.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. We hear from Akeem and Slick as they talk about facing all of the top talents while the Hart Foundation tell the Rougeaus to check out the win/loss column as they are coming after them.

Next week we will see Hercules, Ultimate Warrior, and the Big Bossman. Plus, Andre the Giant on the Brother Love Show and more.

Final Thoughts: Besides the Rockers/Brainbusters segment, not much else in terms of big news. They pushed the other top feuds with interviews and insert promos as we also found out the Royal Rumble will air at 4pm EST on January 15th.
