Suppose David Von Erich survives his "intestinal illness". And let’s suppose that Mike gets to pursue a career in TV production and doesn’t get sick. Etc. Etc. Etc. (A helluva lot of "what ifs", I know.) But…
Basically, if the Von Erichs had managed to avoid all their tragedies, how long do you think World Class would have lasted? Do you think that they could’ve given Vince a run for his money through the late 80s and early 90s (perhaps beyond)? Or do you think Fritz’s questionable booking and overall scumbaggery would’ve done World Class in, eventually? Or, perhaps the oil bust would’ve finished them off in any case.
World Class, like all territories that weren’t WWF or WCW, was dying regardless. However, the other thing to keep in mind is that even while Fritz has a mostly-full roster of Von Erichs to work with, Ken Mantell kept running the same Freebirds v. Von Erichs feud into the GROUND and the downward spiral of his business started well before the tragedies really took their toll. Not to mention that healthy Von Erichs would have been raided by the bigger promotions in a heartbeat, and Fritz likely would have let them go in exchange for financial compensation. The story was always going to have the same ending, no matter what.
