Was Bill Goldberg ahead of his time with his MMA-inspired persona? If so, is a Goldberg-style character what WWE needs if they are to have another breakout, mainstream star?

The real question is "Do they WANT another mainstream star?" and the answer appears to be "No." The current philosophy is to cut guys off before they get too big and leave, hence the 50/50 booking stuff. Even with a great character, it’s incredibly difficult for anyone to get enough steam to break out of the pack today. They kind of want Miz for that role and they still can’t resist booking him like a dork 90% of the time.
