WWF Wrestling Challenge – July 17, 1988

July 17, 1988

From the Broome County Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Binghamton, NY

Your hosts are Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon

In action this week will be Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Demolition, and Brutus Beefcake. Plus, Brother Love with guests Bobby Heenan and King Haku

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Chris Duffy

Duffy rakes the eyes and briefly works over Beefcake before getting backdropped. We hear from Jimmy Hart and the Honky Tonk Man as they deny the report in “WWF Magazine” that Hart is dressing up as Peggy Sue when he is supposed to be barred from ringside. Back to the match as Beefcake hits an atomic drop as Heenan leaves to prepare for the Brother Love show. Beefcake then puts Duffy away with a sleeper (2:23). After the match, Beefcake gives Duffy a haircut.

Thoughts: They pushed the Honky/Beefcake feud here and the story that Jimmy Hart is dressing up as Peggy Sue to counter the house show matches that had Hart barred from ringside. This feud was really not as over as you would think. Honky’s heel act was starting to run out of steam here.

Brother Love Show with guests Bobby Heenan and King Haku. He first talks about King Harley Race’ career being cut short due to Hulk Hogan, as the fans applaud, then goes on about that until Heenan and Haku appear. Heenan talks up Haku as the newest King of the WWF then asks Brother Love to tell the crowd to get up and show respect to Haku. Heenan get pissed as the crowd boos then says this is why he hates them as Brother Love reminds Heenan he does not have hate in his heart.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Gino Carabello

Duggan beats on Carabello after getting his eyes raked. He beats on Carabello as the fans are eating up his act then his the Three Point Stance for the win (1:55).

Thoughts:  Duggan is still wildly over as the briefly touched upon his feud with Andre on commentary.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. Slick talks about the Big Bossman, who he says will solve his problem of rule-breaking competitors. Bossman comes out and says that pain is what makes his world go round. Koko B. Ware is then clapping and singing about feeling good while Frankie is on his shoulder. Koko then talks about being a “nobody” if you are not part of the WWF. Okay then.

Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Rusty Riddle & Billy Woods

Ax beats down Woods to start. We hear from Demolition in an insert promo as they gloat over the fact they demolished Strike Force and tell other teams to sign a contract to face them. Riddle tags in and gets destroyed while the announcers speculate as to who can beat Demolition. After beating on Riddle for a bit, Demolition finishes him off with the Decapitation (3:46).

Thoughts: With their feud against Stirke Force over, they are now going with the story that no one is tough enough to beat Demolition.

George “The Animal” Steele vs. Larry Kruger

Steele tries to rub Kruger’s bald head to start. Steele then shoves Mine in Kruger’s face before tying it on the ropes. We hear from Steele and Mine in an insert promo as Steele said that Mine was cute as he beats on Kruger until putting him away with the Flying Hammerlock (1:53).

Thoughts: This was really just Steele doing his schtick while attempting to get over the Mine Doll.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. We hear from the Rockers as Marty tells us its not easy being a Rocker as the team tells us they will go through every team standing in their way in order to get a title shot against Demolition. After that, we hear from Jimmy Hart and Greg Valentine, who says his shinguard is only for his injury as he does not need help to beat anyone. This was the first promo with the wrestler’s logo on the screen.

The Bolsheviks w/ Slick vs. Omar Atlas & Joe Milano

The camera shows ring announcer Mike McGuirk eating a WWF Ice Cream Bar as Heenan jokes that they give her ice cream in lieu of payment. Atlas hits Zhukov with a dropkick but misses a second attempt as the Bolsheviks regain control. They beat on Milano until putting him away after Volkoff hit a flying knee drop from the top (2:27).

Thoughts: They are trying to push the Bolsheviks as a dominant team. Well, for now anyway.

We get a replay of the “WWF Special Report” from the 7/16/88 Superstars where Savage issued a challenge to DiBiase & Andre for a tag match.

Junkyard Dog vs. Dusty Wolfe

JYD headbutts Wolfe a few times as Gorilla teases Heenan about knowing who Savage will have as a partner then JYD gets the win with a powerslam (1:19).

Thoughts: A quick win for JYD. His feud with Ron Bass was briefly mentioned at the end.

“Ravishing” Rick Rude w/Bobby Heenan vs. Ron Stevens

Gorilla is solo on commentary. The crowd starts up a “weasel” chant as Rude beats on his opponent. He puts Stevens in a chinlock and yells “c’mon Jake” before hitting the Rude Awakening for the win (2:03). After the match, Rude gives a woman from the audience the Rude Awakening then blows a kiss to the camera with lipstick all over his face

Thoughts: Rude kept this entertaining as his heel act continues to grow strong.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. The Fabulous Rougeaus tell us they will be moving to the United States in just a few weeks. Patera runs down the Iron Sheik and talks about how he does not like people coming into his country and running it down then promises to beat his “Watermelon Head.” Sheik returned briefly before getting fired again for drug use about a month later.

Next week in action will be the Rockers, Big Bossman, Ted DiBiase, and the Powers of Pain. Plus, Cheryl & Jake Roberts as guests of the “Brother Love” show and more.

Final Thoughts: Not much of a show this week. It really just recapped the Savage stuff and featured another bad Brother Love segment as that character is really struggling out of the gate.
