It’s fun reading the Observers and seeing the mistakes the various promoters would make that would eventually lead to their doom. But it’s easy to see what they were decades later. My question is if you were one of promoters of any of the territories (your pick) what are the some of the same mistakes you can see yourself making? Doesn’t even even have to be one we’ve read about yet, but you know is coming.
I think the main one I’d make is the same one that everyone but Vince made: Paying yourself out of the boom period rather than investing the money back into the product to grow it. Vince had a lot of lean years personally while he pumped every cent of the profits from the WWF into making it look 100x more professional than all the other rinky-dink promoters in the country. While he was doing that, the others guys (especially Fritz and Jerry Jarrett) made sure to keep all the money they were making to themselves. Jim Crockett had the exact opposite problem — he gave out HUGE bonuses for Starrcade 83 and then started sinking way too much money into the company trying to compete with Vince in a way that he wasn’t qualified to do. I feel like I’d be Joe Blanchard, sticking to my little territory and using borrowed talent every couple of weeks.
