Flair the Booker

Hey Scott,

What were the circumstances of Flair stepping down as booker/head of the booking committee at the end of 89/beginning of 90? The NWA was on a historic run of quality with about a zillion young up-and-coming guys who could have challenged Flair well into 91. Did he step down or was he turfed out?

Being Ric Flair is a 24 hour a day job, man. Right from the start Dave was saying that it was pretty much suicide for him to take on a booking job in addition to being champion. That being said, Jim Herd was under tremendous pressure to keep costs way down, and Flair’s run as booker just wasn’t balancing the books. I think we get to Flair’s fallouts with Herd by the end of the year, but I’m not 100% sure. Obviously their relationship didn’t end well, though.
