Sunday Daily MOVIE Update

– I watched Pitch Perfect 2 last night. It was pretty funny, although CJ “Lana” Perry is given a credited role despite only appearing in the background of the big song to end the competition and barely only being on screen for maybe a second.

– Star Wars is now only $10 million away from destroying Avatar’s all-time domestic gross record of $750 million, despite a “disappointing” weekend of $88 million. The movie now sits at a staggering $1.5 billion worldwide for the #6 all-time spot, within spitting distance of Furious 7 after only three weeks of release.

– I also watched The Hateful Eight on New Year’s Day, and yeah, it’s pretty great. Unfortunately the 70mm roadshow didn’t come to Canada, but it still looks fantastic despite the obvious comparions to Reservoir Dogs. I will say that Tim Roth’s character seems like it should have been Christoph Waltz and indeed it’s a tad long for the minimal story beats being told, but I felt like the character development really benefited from the extra-long bits of dialogue work. Whether it’ll work on the smaller screen as well, I don’t know, but I really enjoyed it at the theater.
