Heel Turns

Scott,

Most top-level faces historically resist a heel turn for years, insisting on representing as a face until their time is gone. Austin tried to buck the trend, turning heel when he was still the predominant face of the company (Rock was competing but Austin still led by houses and merch). His heel turn was resented by the fans and business would never really be the same, even when he returned to being the face 8 months later. Had there been another example of a major draw trying to ‘do the right thing’ and it biting him in the ass so much?

I think Austin was relatively unique in that he wasn’t just a top face, he was a transcendent star that was the face of the company. There’s really only a few guys who were ever in his position, and most of them were smart enough to never try what Vince did in 2001.
