NJPW/CMLL Fantastica Mania 2017: January 20th & 21st

Every January since 2011, NJPW and CMLL have co-promoted a series of shows in Japan. These are set apart from ongoing New Japan storylines for the most part, although there are typically several matches for CMLL titles. The last three shows of this year’s tour are being broadcast on NJPW World, two of which I’m covering here, with the final show happening tomorrow.

NJPW World Tag League Final 2016

December 10th, 17:00 from Sekisui Heim Super Arena, Miyagi

This year’s tournament saw the Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa) and Great Bash Heel (Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe) win their respective blocks, and today’s final sees them compete to determine the winner of the 2016 World Tag League. Elsewhere, much of the Wrestle Kingdom card is set, but there are still some major players without a match and we should get a clearer picture of their role by the end of the show.

Today’s sold out show sees all four members of Los Ingobernables de Japón compete in singles matches at the top of the card with the Intercontinental title defence headlining this event for the third year running. Elsewhere, the Super Jr. Tag Tournament final features NOAH representatives ACH and Taiji Ishimori against the quarrelling Roppongi Vice, and a top-line Bullet Club team of Omega, Cole and the Bucks faces off with Okada’s CHAOS team.

NJPW Destruction in Tokyo

This is the first of three Destruction shows over the next week and is headlined by KUSHIDA vs. BUSHI for the IWGP Junior Championship and Shibata vs. Bobby Fish for the NEVER Openweight title. The latter looked like it might be cancelled due to Shibata’s neck issues, but “The Wrestler” had other ideas.

NJPW Super J-Cup 2016

The Super J-Cup 2016 arrives as something of an afterthought following the excellent G1 Climax, which ended a week ago today. The first round took place at Korakuen Hall last month and was a decent show in its own right, but we move to a bigger venue for the Super J-Cup proper and the tournament matches are bolstered by IWGP and GHC junior tag title matches. Let’s get to it.
