May 17th, 18:30 from Korakuen Hall, Tokyo
Welcome to the first day of 2017’s Best of the Super Juniors. Today’s show is all-tournament, with both A and B blocks competing in their first round of matches. We’ll see Marty Scurll’s New Japan debut vs. Will Ospreay, while in the main event Dragon Lee and Hiromu Takahashi face off once again.
May 3rd, 17:00 from Fukuoka Convention Centre, Fukuoka
The final New Japan show of Golden Week sees Kazuchika Okada defend his IWGP title against Bad Luck Fale, Kenny Omega taking on Tomohiro Ishii, and the NEVER 6-Man and IWGP tag team titles on the line. Let’s get to it.
This being Japan’s “Golden Week”, NJPW is running three significant shows, concluding with Wrestling Dontaku on Wednesday. For that reason, I’ve decided to make this a two-in-one review, covering the main matches that took place on Thursday’s Road to Wrestling Dontaku and today’s Wrestling Toyo No Kuni. Between the two we have the Junior tag titles defended, Goto vs. Suzuki for the NEVER title, Hiromu vs. Ricochet for the Junior title, Tanahashi and EVIL in a special singles match, and Naito vs. Juice Robinson for the Intercontinental title. Let’s get to it.
April 9th, 16:00 from the Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall), Tokyo
The newly-christened Sakura Genesis is headlined by Okada vs. Shibata for the IWGP title, Hiromu Takahashi and KUSHIDA face-off once more for the Junior belt, and Zack Sabre Jr. attempts to get his hands on some New Japan gold, challenging Hirooki Goto for the NEVER title. Let’s get to it.
March 20th, 15:00 from Ao-re Nagaoka, Niigata
Yesterday’s show saw Bad Luck Fale and Katsuyori Shibata get past EVIL and Tomohiro Ishii respectively to reach today’s final. Up for grabs, as well as the prestige of winning the Cup itself, is a title shot of the winner’s choice. The rest of the card features multi-man tags that will likely set up matches for April’s Sakura Genesis. Let’s get to it.
March 19th, 15:00 from Act City Hamamatsu, Shizuoka
The 2nd Round saw EVIL and Bad Luck Fale progress on the left-hand side of the bracket while familiar foes Katsuyori Shibata and Tomohiro Ishii battled through on the right-hand side, and those two matches are our headliners today. Let’s get to it.
The exits of Tanahashi, Elgin, Suzuki and Omega in the 1st Round busted many a bracket and, more importantly, blew the tournament wide open. The 2nd Round took place over four days this week and here’s how it went down…
The New Japan Cup is a sixteen-man, single elimination tournament, the winner of which gets to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight, IWGP Intercontinental, or NEVER Openweight Championship at an upcoming show, most likely April’s Sakura Genesis. Let’s get to it.
March 6th, 19:00 from Ota City General Gymnasium, Tokyo
In this venue exactly 45 years ago, NJPW ran its debut show headlined by Antonio Inoki vs. Karl Gotch. Today’s anniversary memorial show is topped by Kazuchika Okada vs. the mysterious Tiger Mask W, and elsewhere features Hiromu Takahashi defending his Junior title against Taguchi, both tag titles on the line, and the debut of Zack Sabre Jr. in a Rev Pro title match against Shibata.
February 27th, 18:30 from Korakuen Hall, Tokyo
The second of two NJPW and ROH co-promoted shows sees Omega and Okada face off for the first time since Wrestle Kingdom in the eight-man tag main event, Adam Cole vs. YOSHI-HASHI for the ROH title, and Hirooki Goto vs. Punisher Martinez for the NEVER title. Let’s get to it.
