newjapan

April 10th, 16:00 from the Ryōgoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall), Tokyo

Big show today headlined by Okada vs. Naito for the IWGP Heavyweight title, with all but one of New Japan’s titles also being defended. Will Ospreay makes his debut against KUSHIDA in a much-anticipated bout, CHAOS vs. Los Ingobernables de Japón continues, Shibata battles another of The Old Bastards* (*not actual stable name), and Yoshi Tatsu returns after a broken neck and disastrous attempt at English-language commentary (which today is provided by Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino).

MVP has been fired from Lucha Underground a week after signing with them. On YouTube he explained that his contract was terminated after he interviewed members of the cast for his podcast, which violated the non-disclosure terms of his deal.

According to Wrestling Observer, Ring of Honor’s Cedric Alexander is the latest name to be rumoured for WWE’s Global Cruiserweight Series, with EVOLVE, Progress and Revolution Pro expected to announce their qualifying matches in the next week or so. Kota Ibushi, meanwhile, claimed in Tokyo Sports that there were no concrete talks with WWE during last weekend’s visit, but “If there’s an offer, I’m definitely interested.”

NJPW Invasion Attack takes place tomorrow, headlined by Okada vs. Naito for the IWGP title and featuring, KUSHIDA vs. Ospreay for the Junior title, The Elite vs. Tanahashi, Elgin and a returning Yoshi Tatsu, and Sydal & Ricochet vs. Roppongi Vice for the Junior tag titles (the result of which will surely give a clear indication of Ricochet’s status).

Wrestlemania ★ Sunday Thread

Yes indeed, it’s Wrestlemania Sunday and here’s some music to get you in the mood:

The Hall of Fame ceremony was last night and, as expected, Sting officially announced his retirement.

I could go on a rant here (and did, then deleted it), but I hope the show over-delivers and that interesting stuff happens. If we end up with Reigns winning clean and Shane beating Taker without the help of a certain stable I don’t want to be responsible for the fallout (and won’t be, that’ll be on the dedicated WM Hour 4 thread).

Enjoy the day everyone, it comes but once a year. Now talk, heathens!

Man oh man did Wrestlemania weekend get off to a great start last night with NXT Takeover Dallas. The tag opener was great (love me some American Alpha), the women’s match told a fine story, the main event was a bloody brawl, and Zayn vs. Nakamura… well, it was a match that’ll be on a lot of lists at the end of the year but will be remembered way beyond that. Our dark overlord Scott Keith’s patented Smark Rant is here.

  • Bobby Roode and Kota Ibushi were at ringside for Takeover.
  • Several promotions have shows today including Evolve and Shimmer
  • WWE’s Hall of Fame ceremony is tonight, with Sting, The Freebirds, Big Boss Man and Stan Hansen among those to be inducted.

Anything else going on this weekend? Oh right, Wrestlemania. Feel free to discuss the rumours, dispense hot takes and pre-bitch/get hyped to your heart’s content.

Happy Easter BoDers!

We’re one week away from Wrestlemania ★ – I hope everyone is readying themselves for the twelve hour broadcast.

In wrestling news, Finn Balor’s finisher (formerly Bloody Sunday) is now 1916, appropriately enough in tribute to the Easter Rising of that year in Ireland. Undertaker was at the Performance Centre on Friday getting ready for his match against Shane McMahon. And you’ll all be pleased to hear that Nikki Bella is but three and a half months away from returning.

Ahead of his NXT Takeover debut, Shinsuke Nakamura spoke to Yahoo Japan (translations c/o Chris Charlton). A summary: hearing his WWE theme music “was like a light bulb appearing, it suits me perfectly”;  he had new gear arrive on the same day as leaving Japan, he may use that or his regular gear at Takeover; he only just left Japan, visa issues made him a special case as far as moving to the US so soon before debut.

WWE ran Madison Square Garden last night. The house show was headlined by Reigns & Ambrose vs. Sheamus & Triple H and featured AJ Styles’ Garden debut in a match against Kevin Owens. Jonathan Coachman also appeared and, call me crazy, but I believe he will headline Wrestlemania next year in First Blood match vs. Brock Lesnar.

PW Insider is reporting that Luke Harper will be out for five to six months.

Now talk, damn it.

Sami Zayn worked his last NXT house show last night. Here’s a photo of Jason Jordan and Finn Bálor demonstrating superhuman strength in lifting the colossus onto their shoulders.

Elsewhere, the EVOLVE 56 iPPV happened last night. Chris Hero and Zack Sabre Jr. were reportedly involved in typically excellent matches, and William Regal was present to announce that “US qualifying matches” for the Global Cruiserweight Series would be happening at forthcoming EVOLVE shows.

Not much in the way of wrestling news aside from Hogan’s win against Gawker (of course he went over). Gawker founder Nick Denton has claimed that key evidence and “the most important witness” were withheld from the trial, and states that they are already preparing their appeal. Now, I know we have a lot of amateur lawyers here on the Blog of Doom, so perhaps they could enlighten us as to the likely outcome of this ongoing feud. Will the rematch be a No Holds Barred street match or a Money in the Bank ladder match? And if Hogan does retain the cash, how long until he pays Vince off to make him World Champion one more time, brother?

A week after Rounds One and Two we reach the Finals of the New Japan Cup. The semi-finals are Naito vs. Yano and Goto vs. Elgin, with the winner of the tournament to be determined in the main event. The rest of the card featured tag matches that will likely set up matches April’s Invasion Attack.

It’s being reported that WWE’s plans for Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows have changed, and that they’ll now head straight to the main roster, likely soon after Wrestlemania.

There were some injuries at house shows last night: Emma and Tomasso Ciampa at NXT in Cleveland; Charlotte and Sheamus at WWE in Minneapolis.

Global Force Wrestling is teaming with American Ninja Warrior producer A. Smith & Co. Productions for a new series.

UFC 196 is this evening, headlined by Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz and Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate. Feel free to start the hype.

NJPW New Japan Cup 2016: Round Two

newjapan

March 4th, 18:30 from Korakuen Hall, Tokyo

RIP Hayabusa

Yesterday’s Round One show was good from top to bottom, with several big announcements made as well. Aside from a should-be-good Naito vs. Ishii bout, today’s Cup matches aren’t so promising on paper, with the route to the final appearing clear. But, who knows, we might get an upset or two.
