From the New Haven Coliseum in New Haven, CT
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Mr. Perfect. Vince informs us that Hulk Hogan is once again WWF World Heavyweight Champion and for the fourth occasion as Piper flashes the four sign. Vince says WWF President Jack Tunney will have a statement regarding the controversial finish from This Tuesday in Texas. Piper then threatens Perfect if he tries to interfere in his matches as Perfect only cares about Ric Flair being the real world’s champion.
In action this week are the Legion of Doom, Ted DiBiase, New Foundation, and the Nasty Boys.
Legion of Doom vs. The Executioners
The Executioners are Dwayne Gill & Barry Hardy under masks, which actually looked kinda cool. They had skulls airbrushed on them. The LoD clear the ring then beat on Executioner #2 (Hardy). Perfect thinks the Natural Disasters will become too much for LoD as #1 tags into the match. The LoD stay in control until they hit the Doomsday Device on #1 for the win while Piper and Perfect are going are talking trash to each other (3:19).
Thoughts: The focus here was not on the tag champs but rather the conflict between Piper and Perfect on commentary.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We learn that the Survivor Series will be available from Coliseum Home Video on December 19th. Okerlund then tells us that Hogan is once again the champion. We then hear from Tunney, who says that sometimes his decisions are not popular but he cannot stand by without taking action. He mentions that the referee decision is final but that he can vacate the title, making it up for grabs at the Royal Rumble. Tunney also says that Hogan and The Undertaker can draw from numbers 20-30 due to being the last two champions. Okerlund is shocked at the announcement and promises we will hear from Hogan later on in the show.
Al Phillips vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart
The announcers talk about Tunney’s announcement with Piper stressing that any man who enters the Royal Rumble can win the title. Perfect applauds Tunney’s decision but Piper wants to know how this decision was made so quickly when it took three months to reinstate Randy Savage. Mountie beats on Phillips and uses his control techniques. He yells at Jameson, who is in the crowd, then Mountie puts Phillips away with a two-handed chokeslam (1:39). After the match, Mountie reads Phillips his rights as Perfect talks about knowing a wrestler who might want to enter the Rumble. Mountie then shocks Phillips as Piper promises to take it out on Mountie one day. We get a closeup of Jameson sticking his tongue out towards Mountie then he runs away.
Thoughts: The announcers put over Tunney’s decision regarding the Royal Rumble match. They also focused on Jamison in the crowd as a dorky fan.
A clip of Repo Man costing Virgil the Million Dollar Title at the Survivor Series Showdown airs.
“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri vs. Ross Greenberg
DiBiase shoves down Greenberg then we hear him in an insert promo calling out El Matador. Greenberg lands a few shots but is knocked down as Piper hints as a guy who might win the Rumble but would not be the guy WWF wants as champion. DiBiase stays in control then puts Greenberg away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:32). After the match, Greenberg gets a $100 bill shoved down his throat.
Thoughts: Besides hyping up the DiBiase/Matador feud we heard from Piper, hinting that he has someone in mind that could win the Rumble but would not be the type of champion the WWF would want. This stuff from Piper would continue throughout the show.
Kato & Peter Weeks vs. New Foundation
Vince puts over Owen as being the younger brother of Bret Hart. Perfect mocks the Canadian accent as Owen and Kato start off the match. Owen hits a spinning heel kick but eats boot on a charge in the corner. Owen comes back with a hip toss then works the arm as Vince believes since Bret is busy as the Intercontinental Champion, Neidhart chose Bret’s brother Owen as a partner. The New Foundation work over Weeks as the announcers talk about tag teams being in the Rumble match as Vince says loners have the advantage. Piper continues to talk about the person he has in mind for the Rumble match and that we might find out shortly then the New Foundation use the Rocket Launcher for the win (3:52).
Thoughts: We got some sort of an explanation as to why the New Foundation are together. Owen continues to look great. The Piper stuff about the Rumble was the main focus, however.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund. We hear from Hogan as he talks about taking the good with the bad and knows Tunney had to do what he did but Hulkamania is stronger than ever. Okerlund tells us we will hear more about the Rumble next week.
Barry Horowitz vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
Perfect says Valentine’s figure four leg lock pales in comparison to Flair’s. Piper and Perfect continue to go at each other on commentary as Valentine takes control of the match. We are shown an insert Valentine playing the newest WWF Game Boy release. A phone rings as its Tunney looking for Piper. Tunney asks Piper if he will enter the Royal Rumble. Piper accepts and says he will make the best champion ever. Valentine stays in control then drops an elbow for the win (2:46).
Thoughts: The reveal to what Piper was saying led to him as a competitor in the Rumble match.
Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Mario Mancini & Paul Perez
Jamison yells at the Nasty Boys. Knobbs beats on Mancini to start. The Nasty Boys stay in control as Perfect tells Piper he has never wrestled the real world’s champion so Piper says he is quitting as a commentator to dedicate his life in order to win the Rumble. Perez is in the ring getting destroyed as Perfect takes credit for running off Piper just by mentioning Flair’s name. The Nasty Boys stay in control as Vince says Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter are waiting to face them then the Nasty Boys use a running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo for the win (4:25).
Thoughts: The big news is learning that Piper has quit as a commentator to focus on the Rumble match. They also hyped a potential feud between Nasty Boys/Duggan & Slaughter.
Next week in action are The Bushwhackers, Virgil, and Jake Roberts. Plus, a “special presentation” to Bret Hart and the Royal Rumble Report.
Final Thoughts: Huge news this week as the World Heavyweight Title has been vacated and is now up for grabs in the Royal Rumble match. Also, Piper is no longer a color commentator as he is training for the Rumble so he can win the title. With three names so far announced we will find out over the next few weeks the other 27 men that will be part of the Rumble match.
