Main Events

By Scott Keith on 4 June 2018

Hey Scott,

“Main Event” appears to be one of those terms that can be difficult to define. There are those who would say that, without question, the last match of the evening / PPV is always the 'main event', no questions asked.
But, especially on earlier NWA / WCW cards, the World title match was the second-last match, with a battle royal or similar match going on last. Finally, you have the times when (WMXVIII being an obvious example) a match going on before the end is clearly
the most-promoted match with the greatest fan interest, whether or not this was what the promotion intended.

So, I suppose my questions are :

1.
Do you think the biggest, most-promoted match of a card should always go on last?

2.
Would you justify moving match placements around to ensure that, to use the cliché, the fans 'go home happy'?

3.
What's your best example of the 'wrong' match going on last at a PPV?

1. Unless there's extenuating circumstances, yes.
2. Depends on the situation. I wouldn't want to fall into the trap of always having to have the babyfaces win, but if you can swing it, yes.
3. Jericho v. HHH at WM 18 is the gold standard.
