WWF Superstars of Wrestling – June 1, 1991

June 1, 1991

From the Metro Centre in Rockford, IL

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage

This week in action are Legion of Doom, The Undertaker, Texas Tornado, and Earthquake.

Legion of Doom vs. WT Jones & Warren Bianchi

Animal beats on Jones as Vince says no one can beat LoD. We then hear from Nasty Boys & Jimmy Hart in an insert promo as they say its time to “nasty-cize” the LoD. Hawk now beats on Bianchi as Vince wonders if that was Hart’s big announcement then the LoD put Bianchi away with the Doomsday Device (2:20).

Thoughts: More hype for the LoD/Nasty Boys feud.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We see the Big Bossman getting attacked by The Mountie & Nasty Boys from two weeks ago. We then hear from Big Bossman in the same promo we saw last week on “Wrestling Challenge.”

Randy Fox vs. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri

Vince wants Piper and Savage not to leave the booth due to Sherri’s presence. Piper then gives Sherri some “compliments” as DiBiase beats the crap out of Fox. Piper yells at Savage for dating Sherri as Virgil is in an insert promo where he flips a coin and tells DiBiase he will lose either way. DiBiase then puts Fox away with the Million Dollar Dream before shoving a $100 bill down his throat (2:04).

Thoughts: Despite the announcers showing disgust in both DiBiase & Sherri the duo is not really gelling as an act. DiBiase’s focus is now shifting away from Piper and back on to Virgil.

An ad for the WBF Championship airs.

Texas Tornado vs. Brooklyn Brawler

Vince puts over Tornado’s physique then talks about the Fitness Expo and how it will have the latest in fashion and nutrition. The announcers now talk about Hart’s announcement as Tornado works over Brawler then puts him away with the Tornado Punch (1:29).

Thoughts: If you are on the roster with a good physique and nothing going on then your matches become backdrops for WBF talk.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center for more WBF Championship hype. They talk about competitor Mike Quinn and tell us how to get tickets for the event.

Jimmy Hart is now in the ring before the Earthquake’s match. He says after the match we will hear his special announcement and asks Gene Okerlund to come ringside and bear witness to what he has to say.

Earthquake w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Kevin Kruger

Earthquake beats on Kruger as we hear from him in an insert promo warning Jake Roberts that Lucifer will also feel the quake. Earthquake then hits Kruger with a powerslam before finishing him off with the sit-down splash (1:37).

Thoughts: Same as every other squash match but the real draw here was Hart’s announcement.

Okerlund is now in the ring. He asks Hart about his huge, shocking announcement. Hart says that he manages the Tag Team Champions and wants to make sure they stay champions forever. So, if anyone wants a shot at the Tag Team Titles they will have to go through his new team then says that joining forces with Earthquake will be……………Andre the Giant. Okerlund does not believe him and says Andre is here this week and will invite him out to see if it is true. Andre walks out as Hart meets him in the aisle. Andre walks with Hart and they come into the ring. Poor Andre can barely get his legs over the top rope. Andre stares at Earthquake, who extends his hand. Andre shakes his hands as the fans boo. Okerlund then asks Andre if he signed a contract with Hart as Andre smiles. We are shown clips of Andre declining the other managers then Okerlund asks him point blank if he has signed with Hart. Andre says “no” as the crowd cheers. Andre smiles at an irate Hart but gets attacked from behind by Earthquake, who clips Andre’s knee with the megaphone. Earthquake continues to attack Andre’s knee as Savage says we are seeing the end of Andre’s career. Earthquake continues to damage Andre’s knee and finally stops. Andre then tries to stand by pulling himself up with the ropes but falls. Andre rolls out and tries to walk on his own but drops as Piper wants to get Andre some help. Andre then slowly guides himself backstage by using the guardrail as he refuses help as Vince speculates this is the end of Andre’s career. I thought this was an excellent angle and good payoff from those vignettes that saw Andre humiliate various managers. Worth noting that Earthquake, currently involved in a heated feud with Jake Roberts, will now have someone else to feud with too.

The Orient Express w/ Mr. Fuji vs. John Anderson & Dave Sigfritts

The announcers talk about the attack on Andre. Vince lets us know that “Prime Time Wrestling” will be moving back to Monday nights. The World Football League season had concluded. The Orient Express beat on Anderson then put him away with a super kick/bridging German suplex combo (1:49).

Thoughts: Big news here is Prime Time going back to Monday nights.

Another ad for the WBF Championship airs.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Dan Robbins

Bearer is shown in an insert promo holding his urn telling the Ultimate Warrior next time he will wind up in the urn. Vince talks about the psychological damage caused after Warrior was locked in the coffin as Undertaker quickly puts Robbins away with a tombstone (1:42).

Thoughts: They continue to play up the storyline as to whether or not Warrior can come back psychologically after being locked in the coffin.

Next week in action are The Dragon, The Berzerker, Virgil, Big Bossman, and Sgt. Slaughter. Plus, Irwin R. Schyster will be guest on the “Funeral Parlor” and more!

Final Thoughts: The Andre angle was great but the rest of this show revolved around the WBF, which is just something most wrestling fans have no interest in seeing. And expect a lot more WBF hype over the next few weeks.
