March 24, 1991
From the Lee County Civic Center in Ft. Myers, FL
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
This week, we have a special interview with Hulk Hogan. In action are The Undertaker, Texas Tornado, Nasty Boys, and Rick Martel.
Texas Tornado vs. Cliff Sheats
Tornado uses a leg sweep as the announcers talk about his match against Dino Bravo at WrestleMania. Heenan talks about his men being victorious at WrestleMania as Tornado is in an insert promo saying it will be Bravo’s last WrestleMania. And he was right. Tornado stays in control then hits the Tornado Punch for the win (2:44).
Thoughts: Tornado got the win but his stock continues to plummet heading into WrestleMania.
WWF Special Report with Gene Okerlund. Same as “Superstars of Wrestling” that focused on the Hulk Hogan/Sgt. Slaughter stuff from the Road to WrestleMania VII special.
Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Rico Frederico & Randy Hunter
We get more instant replay talk from the announcers about how the Nasty Boys won the #1 contender battle royal. The Nasty Boys attack their opponents then we hear from the Hart Foundation in an insert promo saying they will stay champions at WrestleMania. Nasty Boys beat on Hunter now and put him away with the running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo (2:41).
Thoughts: More generic hype for the Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania.
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Terry Davis
Heenan talks about Marla Maples being at WrestleMania and the rumor she dropped Donald Trump to go with himself. We hear from Jake Roberts in an insert promo holding up a hood to hype the blindfold match at WrestleMania. Martel beats on Davis as the crowd chants for Jake. Martel gets pissed and pulls out a blindfold that he puts on Davis. Martel destroys Davis while Heenan jokes that he’s seen Mike McGuirk leave a lot of clubs wearing a similar hood then Martel uses the Boston Crab for the win (2:23).
Thoughts: Heenan gets in another dig at McGuirk as we are near the end of the Jake/Martel feud.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Hulk Hogan to the interview platform. Okerlund asks about the future of Hulkamania being in question at WrestleMania. Hogan talks about Sgt. Slaughter firing up the Hulkamaniacs then goes on about promising the Hulkamaniacs and the Armed Forces he will bring home the championship. After a promise like that there is no way Hogan can come up short at WrestleMania.
Dale Wolfe vs. The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer
Undertaker catches Wolfe with a chokeslam then puts him in a tree-of-woe. We hear from Snuka in an insert promo as he promises to bury Undertaker at WrestleMania then the Undertaker stays in control and puts Wolfe away with a tombstone (2:31).
Thoughts: The Undertaker continues to impress. They can push Snuka all they want using his past accolades but its 1991 and no one has bought him as a threat since returning two years ago.
WrestleMania Report with Gene Okerlund.
Tito Santana vs. Pez Whatley
The announcers run down the WrestleMania card as Tito works the arm. We hear from The Mountie in an insert promo as he claims Tito will never be able to show his face in Canada again. Tito beats on Whatley then hits the flying forearm for the win (1:28).
Thoughts: Tito can still go in the ring but is clearly being phased out.
The Hogan/Slaughter video first shown on the Prime Time Wrestling special airs.
Final Thoughts: This show aired the day of the PPV and was pretty much an infomercial for the show. Next week on the TV shows we will get the PPV fallout then move on to other feuds and programs that will carry into the Summer.
