WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 10th, 1990

March 10, 1990

From the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, AZ

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon. After he was decked out in Hulk Hogan gear last week, Jesse is now wearing Ultimate Warrior gear and is picking him to win at WrestleMania.

This week, the featured match is Hulk Hogan vs. Dino Bravo. Also in action are Big Bossman, Rhythm & Blues, Rick Martel, and Akeem. Plus, comments from the Ultimate Warrior and the WrestleMania VI Report.

Rhythm & Blues w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Frankie Valdez & Steve Gatorwolf

Vince cannot believe Valentine’s new look. We hear from Jimmy Hart in an insert promo as he tells us that at WrestleMania VI, his team will debut their single “Hunka, Hunka, Hunka, Honky Love.” Vince wants to know more about this song as Rhythm & Blues work over Valdez for a bit then put him away with a double back suplex (3:05). After the match we get these goofy closeups of Valentine playing the guitar.

Thoughts: The big news here is that Rhythm & Blues will be debuting a song at WrestleMania VI. On commentary they spent a lot of time putting over Valentine’s new look.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week, Okerlund tells us that Mr. Fuji debuting the Orient Express last week caused a conflict of interest with the Powers of Pain as we then see that he sold the contract of The Warlord to Slick and the contract of The Barbarian to Bobby Heenan. And this was the end of the Powers of Pain, who really underwhelmed as a team in the WWF. They just never got over that much either as heels or faces.

Big Bossman vs. Iron Mike Sharpe

Sharpe attacks Bossman from behind but Bossman fights back. Bossman hits Sharpe with an avalanche then elbows him down as we hear from him in an insert promo telling Akeem to pick up a copy of “WWF Magazine” and read how he will take him out at WrestleMania VI before hitting a sidewalk slam for the win (1:32). After the match, Bossman cuffs Sharpe to the ropes and hits him with his nightstick as Jesse yells about Sharpe never breaking a law in his life.

Thoughts: The Akeem/Bossman feud continues and its amazing to see how quickly Bossman got over as a face with the fans. They loved him here.

Rick “The Model” Martel vs. Louie Spicolli

Martel celebrates after an arm drag then we hear him in an insert promo saying that he smells like success. Martel hits a dropkick then works the arm after posing on the middle rope. He pulls up on a dropkick and after that hits a backbreaker before putting Spicolli away with the Boston Crab (1:50).

Thoughts: They are still going all out in getting over the Arrogance gimmick.

We hear from Hulk Hogan. He tells us WrestleMania VI is more intense than the previous five and says its the ultimate test so he went to Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, CA and could not even get an answer from the “magic mirror” as to whether or not he would win. Hogan then says he will fight with everything in his heart and if he is not willing to put in the work to be the Ultimate Hulkamaniac then what’s he going to do with Hulkamania runs wild on him.

Now, the Ultimate Warrior grunts and periodically screams before telling Hogan he is going to enter a world close to “parts unknown” and asks if he will hide or face the challenge.

Akeem w/ Slick vs. Ricki Ataki

Funny moment now as Vince tells Jesse he should “Run for office” the way he flipped-flopped on picking the WrestleMania VI main event winner. Akeem & Slick are shown in an insert promo telling the Big Bossman they were not impressed with his “WWF Magazine” article and that Akeem will beat him at WrestleMania. Akeem beats on Ataki then puts him away with a splash (1:45).

Thoughts: More hype for the Bossman vs. Akeem match at WrestleMania VI.

Brother Love Show with guests the Hart Foundation. He tells us that they will be facing The Bolsheviks at WrestleMania VI and The Bolsheviks will destroy them. Neidhart tells us times are changing and the Berlin Wall is down as Hart says they want the winner of the Tag Team Title match after WrestleMania. The Hart Foundation tells us they are not afraid of either team. Two things here, the most important is that this segment made the Hart Foundation the #1 contenders to the Tag Team Titles. The other thing is that we found out they will be facing The Bolsheviks at WrestleMania VI.

WrestleMania VI Report with Gene Okerlund. We learn of more new matches on the show such as Koko B. Ware vs. Rick Martel and The Rockers vs. Orient Express. This show was from the same tapings where The Rockers were sent home after they showed up covered in bruises from fighting each other the prior night.  Also, Rona Barrett will be part of the show and Robert Goulet will sing the Canadian National Anthem.

Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart & Earthquake vs. Hulk Hogan

Hogan shoves Bravo then just barely gets him over for a backdrop due to Bravo messing it up. Bravo is dropped with an elbow smash as Hogan fires away until Hart grabs his leg as Bravo is now in control. Earthquake chokes out Hogan behind the ref’s back then Bravo hits a side slam but Hogan kicks out and hulks up before putting Bravo away with a leg drop (3:10) 1/4*. After the match, Earthquake attacks Hogan. He drops a pair of elbows before hitting the sitdown splash then Ultimate Warrior runs in and clears Earthquake. Warrior checks on Hogan but gets shoved off so he runs the ropes and almost delivers a clothesline to the back of the neck but stops. Hogan squares off then Warrior runs the ropes again but runs out and leaves. Hogan ends by posing.

Thoughts: The action was bad but we got another Hogan/Warrior confrontation and it set up for a possible Earthquake vs. Hogan match due to the post-match attack.

Next week in action are Jim Duggan, Brutus Beefcake, Bad News Brown, Dusty Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase. Plus, more comments from Hogan and Warrior and the WrestleMania VI Report.

Final Thoughts: Overall, a decent show. The Warrior vs. Hogan stuff is heavily pushed and still over despite the goofy shit from Warrior. Anyway, the WrestleMania VI card is all set now as we are a few weeks away from the PPV.
