WWF Superstars of Wrestling – January 20th, 1990

January 20, 1990

From the Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham, AL

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Ted DiBiase, Demolition, Rick Rude, Jimmy Snuka, and Dino Bravo. Plus, the Royal Rumble Report and Hulk Hogan as a guest on the “Brother Love Show.”

Jimmy Snuka vs. Brooklyn Brawler

Brawler shoves Snuka but gets knocked down. They go back-and-forth for a bit then we hear from Snuka in an insert promo telling us he’s ready for the Royal Rumble. Back to the match as Snuka chops Brawler down then sets him up for the Superfly Splash and hits that for the win (2:04).

Thoughts: Just generic Royal Rumble hype here.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. First, Okerlund lets us know that everyone with access to PPV will be able to order the Royal Rumble as the WWF straightened out their conflict with the cable companies. After that he runs down the other matches taking place at the Royal Rumble PPV.

Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart & Canadian Earthquake vs. Alan Reynolds

Bravo roughs up Reynolds and tosses him around then taunts the crowd before putting him away with a side slam (1:14). After the match, Earthquake hits Reynolds with a sitdown splash as Vince refers to that as a “natural disaster.”

Thoughts: They put over Bravo strong as a threat in the Rumble match while teasing a potential conflict with the Ultimate Warrior in that match.

“Rugged” Ronnie Garvin vs. Pablo Crenshaw

Garvin tosses his towel into the crowd before the match. He grounds Crenshaw then we hear him in an insert promo hyping up his submission match against Valentine at the Royal Rumble. Back to the match as Garvin uses the Garvin Stomp then puts Crenshaw away with the Hammer Jammer (1:47).

Thoughts: More hype for the Garvin vs. Valentine submission match at the Royal Rumble.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w /Virgil vs. Lee Park

Before the match, DiBiase holds up the Million Dollar Belt and talks about how its the most expensive belt in wrestling and then taunts Jake Roberts to come get it as he laughs. DiBiase immediately destroys Park then hits a clothesline. DiBiase then follows with a powerslam before putting Park away with the Million Dollar Dream as Jake is in an insert promo telling DiBiase he does not need an invitation to come get the belt (1:05). After the match, Jake comes to the ring and takes out Virgil then starts brawling with DiBiase as he clotheslines him over the top rope. Jake then takes the belt and says its his as the crowd goes nuts. Jake taunts DiBiase & Virgil to get the belt as he puts it in Damien’s bag while Jesse screams that he is a thief.

Thoughts: Excellent post-match angle here. Jake taking the Million Dollar Belt and sticking it inside Damien’s bag had the crowd going out of their minds as he got a lot of revenge on DiBiase. It also sets up for a Million Dollar Title match down the line.

Brother Love Show with guest Hulk Hogan. He asks Hogan about 29 other men gunning for him at the Royal Rumble as Hogan says Hulkamania is running wilder than ever and hopes he gets #1. He then talks about facing Ultimate Warrior at the end but Brother Love cuts him off and says it will be Mr. Perfect at the end as Hogan says it will be a perfect victory when he tosses him out last. Hogan ends by flexing and posing to the fans.

Dale Wolfe vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan

Rude beats on Wolfe as we hear him in an insert promo calling out Roddy Piper, hoping to see him in the Royal Rumble, before putting Wolfe away with the Rude Awakening (1:05). After the match, Rude gives a woman the Rude Awakening as Heenan asked her if she’d ever kiss a man wearing a skirt.

Thoughts: Easy win for Rude as they teased a potential meeting between Piper and himself at the Rumble.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Alan Martin & George South vs. Demolition

Demolition beat down South to start. The announcers then thank the fans for calling their cable companies in order to have the Royal Rumble available to them. Demolition are in an insert promo promising to get revenge on the Colossal Connection at the Royal Rumble. Martin is in now and gets put away with the Decapitation (2:26).

Thoughts: Demolition destroy their opponents as they hope to face the Colossal Connection at the Royal Rumble.

Final Thoughts: This was mostly last minute hype for the Royal Rumble. The interesting thing here was Hogan teasing the match coming down to the Ultimate Warrior and himself as he all but said they were the two favorites in the match. Anyway, the Rumble is just a day away and they’ve hyped it up as much as possible.
