WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 14th, 1990

January 14, 1990

From the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Gorilla Monsoon

In action this week are Jake Roberts, Rick Rude, Brutus Beefcake, and an interview with Mr. Perfect.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. George South

The announcers talk about the Jake/DiBiase feud as South works the arm. We hear from Jake in an insert promo talking about seeing DiBiase in the Royal Rumble as he takes control of the match. He slams South then soon after that puts him away with a sunset flip (1:19). After the match, Jake hits South with a DDT then dumps Damien on top of him.

Thoughts: Odd finish to this and I have no idea if the ref screwed up or not in counting to three during the sunset flip. Anyway, they are building up to a Jake/DiBiase confrontation at the Royal Rumble

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. He runs down the other matches taking place at the Royal Rumble as we hear from some of the competitors.

“Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Tom Montana

Rude hammers away then flexes after tossing Montana outside. The fans taunt Rude with “Roddy” chants then we hear from Piper as he talks about being the “King of the Jungle” as Rude puts Montana away with the Rude Awakening (1:37). After the match, Rude gives a woman the Rude Awakening but before that Heenan asked if she would kiss a man wearing a skirt, to which she said no.

Thoughts: More hype for the Rude/Piper feud.

Greg Valentine & Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Mark Young & Reno Riggins

Jimmy Hart is shown in an insert promo bragging about his new theme. Young does some dancing and points at Valentine, who no-sells it then locks up. Young hits a dropkick and works the arm before tagging out as Riggins is in but gets backed into the corner as Honky & Valentine take control. They continue to beat on Riggins until Valentine puts him away with the figure four (3:43).

Thoughts: A bit entertaining for a squash match as its becoming clearer Valentine & Honky will be a regular team going forward.

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Tony Burton

Rick Martel is shown in an insert promo upset over Beefcake cutting up his coat and promises that he will pay. Beefcake fires away then hits a high knee before putting Burton away with a sleeper (2:34). After the match, Beefcake gives Burton a haircut.

Thoughts: They are continuing with the Martel/Beefcake feud. No mention of Beefcake’s match against The Genius at the Rumble though.

Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Len Wagner

Bossman hammers away then puts Wagner away with a spinebuster (0:55). After the match, Bossman puts the ball-and-chain on Wagner’s ankle then drops the ball on his ankle then clotheslines him down before dropping the ball on his stomach.

Thoughts: Another match to put over the ball-and-chain gimmick.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Hacksaw Jim Duggan to the interview platform and asks him about his match against the Big Bossman at the Royal Rumble. Duggan says Bossman is a disgrace to law enforcement and he knows about law enforcement, like his father who was the former Chief of Police in Glen Falls, NY. Lame promo to hype up this match at the Rumble PPV.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Mr. Perfect w/ The Genius vs. Mario Mancini

Perfect tosses Mancini in the corner to start then just starts toying with him. Mancini tries to fight back but Perfect knocks him down then asks for some competition. Perfect works over the leg then puts Mancini away with the Perfect Plex (1:38).

Thoughts: A quick match to put over Perfect in his feud against Hogan.

Next week in action are Dusty Rhodes, Powers of Pain, Roddy Piper, and the Colossal Connection. Plus, an interview with the Ultimate Warrior and more!

Final Thoughts: Lots of Royal Rumble hype and little else as we are a week away from the PPV
