WWF Prime Time Wrestling – December 25th, 1989

December 25, 1989

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper, and Bobby Heenan

Piper tells us they have all sorts of presents and evening have Santa Claus, as we cut over to Studio A where Heenan is dressed as Santa Claus. Piper is quite amuzed as he enters the set with Gorilla. He gets Heenan to belt out “ho, ho, ho” and laughs as Gorilla tells Heenan to stay on the set.

Ultimate Warrior defeats Brian Costello from the 12/23/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Back to the set where Piper makes Heenan say “Merry Christmas” and do other things for his amusement.

No Holds Barred PPV Report with Gene Okerlund.

Bad News Brown and Tito Santana fight to a double count out from the 11/25/89 Madison Square Garden show.

On the set again as Heenan tells us reindeer do not fly and why someone would make toys all year and live with a fat, old lady as he says if you want to believe in something, believe in the Heenan Family as he tells us there is no Santa as Piper is pissed. Piper tells Heenan to stop as Gorilla tells him to calm down as he can take care of Heenan.

The Bolsheviks defeat WT Jones & Todd Becker from the 12/24/89 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

Heenan is on the set telling the kids there is no Santa and its a sham as Piper wanders over to Studio A and flips out on Heenan for trying to ruin Christmas. Heenan then takes off the hat, glasses, hair, and beard and says they are fake and Santa is an average guy like him and that the kids have been swerved by their parents but Piper clotheslines Heenan on the desk and roughs him up. When we return, Gorilla tells us that Heenan was taken away by security as Piper is enraged and says he has children and there is a Santa Clause and there always will be as he yells at a producer.

Richard Charland defeats Barry Horowitz from the 10/8/89 Toronto Maple Leaf Garden show. Luckily, this was joined in progress as the full length match was dreadful.

Gorilla is now alone on the set as he says Piper was told to meet with the USA Network head honchos and the producers and brings up the rules about fighting on the set from when Piper and Rick Rude fought each other in the Summer.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. Heenan & Rude tell the fans they are fools for not seeing through Piper. Rude says Piper is jealous, like the fans, because the woman sitting next to them eat, sleeps, and breaths him. Hercules talks about a new decade is upon us but he will still stand tall and strong and is getting bigger and bigger. No shit.

The Genius and Mr. Perfect are on the golf course. Perfect tells Hogan he will beat him for the World Title then go back to being perfect.

Greg “The Hammer” Valentine w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Bret Hart

This is from the 5/8/89 Meadowlands Arena show. Bret gives his shades to a young girl in the front row. Valentine shoves Bret after a break near the ropes as Jimmy is laughing into the megaphone. Bret catches Valentine’s foot then hits an atomic drop before heading out to chase Jimmy. Valentine chases Bret but gets caught trying to enter the ring as Bret fires away. Bret chokes out Valentine with his foot before switching to a chinlock. They slug it out as Bret wins that battle before sending Valentine down with a dropkick. Valentine begs for mercy and kicks Bret low but misses a charge in the corner and rolls outside. Valentine walks around with Jimmy before heading back inside. Bret works an armbar on the mat as we go to break. The action returns as Valentine tosses Bret out to the floor. Jimmy taunts Bret then Valentine taunts the crowd by flexing then knocks Bret off of the apron. Bret gets back in as Valentine hits four elbow drops then stalls before hitting a fifth. He now beats on Bret in the corner then starts targeting the back. He gets two with a small package then hits a headbutt to the midsection for a two count then pins him down on the mat. Valentine hits a clothesline then a backbreaker but decides to go the middle rope where he misses an elbow drop. Bret fights back and wins a slugfest then pushes him down as the crowd goes nuts. Bret hits a suplex for a two count then almost puts him away with a reverse rollup as we see that Mr. Perfect has made his way ringside. Perfect distracts Bret on the apron and that allows Valentine to knee Bret in the back. Valentine now softens up the leg and smiles at Perfect before trying the figure four but Bret shoves him into the corner then covers as the bell rings but the bell went off before the three count as it signals a time-limit draw (19:34) **1/2. After the match, Perfect raises Valentine’s hand and laughs at Bret.

Thoughts: Decent match. At the time of this show they were starting a Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart singles feud and seemingly wanted to protect Bret and have Perfect come out so they can run this at the next show.

Brother Love Show with guests Hulk  Hogan & Brutus Beefcake from the 12/23/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Hercules defeats Craig Green from the 12/16 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Back in the studio, Piper comes back and is still upset as Gorilla assures him things will be sorted out. Piper yells again at the producer and says he made his reputation standing up for himself and if that’s not allowed then the hell with the show. We return as Piper has the producer by the neck and tosses him down out of anger.

The Genius vs. Mark Young

This is from the 11/21/89 “Wrestling Challenge” TV tapings at the Allen County War Memorial. The Genius stalls and does a backflip but Young matches him then hits a hurricarana. Genius bails as Young breakdances for a bit but misses a dropkick as The Genius prances around. He stomps on Young for a bit then roughs him up in the corner. Young fights back and hits a knee lift then a backdrop but the Genius comes back with a crucifix and gets the win (2:50).

Thoughts: This was fine for what it was as The Genius gets the win after “outsmarting” his opponent.

We are shown Dusty Rhodes introducing Sapphire as his manager from the 12/23/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Gorilla tells us everyone knows there is a Santa Claus and calls Heenan “garbage” and that he never wants to see him again.

Randy Savage defeats Jimmy Snuka from the 10/8/89 Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens show.

Back in the studio, Gorilla apologizes for all that happened on the show. Piper comes on and says he has to leave the show now and takes about his temper as he has been fired. Piper tells Gorilla he enjoyed his time with him and shakes his hand then smiles into the camera and says we will see him later. Gorilla says he will be back next week but does not know who else will be there with him.

Final Thoughts: The show long angle over Piper attacking Heenan was the main focus here. The following week they announced that Piper had been fired and Heenan fined $5,000 and placed on one-year probation. The Heenan stuff about Santa not being was pretty funny though and the Hart vs. Valentine match was solid but the rest of this was forgettable.
