WWF Superstars of Wrestling – December 23rd, 1989

December 23, 1989

From the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are the Ultimate Warrior, Colossal Connection, Rick Martel, and Jim Duggan. Plus, Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake as guests on the “Brother Love Show,” comments from Macho King Randy Savage & Zeus, and more!

Ultimate Warrior vs. Brian Costello

Warrior now has his chest painted too. He no-sells a few attacks then chops Costello in the corner. Warrior heads outside and looks underneath the ring for something then chops Costello into the guardrail. The Canadian Earthquake & Dino Bravo tell the Ultimate Warrior that Bravo will become the new Intercontinental Champion as Warrior gets the win with a press slam/splash combo (1:36). After the match, Warrior carries Costello halfway up the aisle then drops him on the floor and steps over him while carrying the Intercontinental Title belt.

Thoughts: Quick win for Warrior as he is feuding with Bravo.

No Holds Barred Report with Gene Okerlund. We are shown clips of Zeus getting disqualified at the Survivor Series then hear from Savage, Zeus, and Queen Sherri as they are cutting an insane promo behind of the blue bars as Sherri climbs up and ends out in front as Savage promises to let down all of the “Pukeamaniacs.”

Colossal Connection w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Burt Todd & Frankie DeFalco

Haku works over Todd as we hear from Demolition in an insert promo wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and talking about facing the Colossal Connection. DeFalco is in now as Haku beats him down as well. Todd is back in again and does not fare any better as he gets folded in half with a back suplex. Andre tags in and holds up Todd as Haku hits a thrust kick then Andre drops an elbow for the win (3:14).

Thoughts: The story here is that the Colossal Connection are being built up as the most dominant team Heenan as ever managed as they are building up to an eventual title match against Demolition.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 1/13/90 Boston Garden show. Dino Bravo is with the Canadian Earthquake & Jimmy Hart talking about being the strongest man in the world and that he will take the Intercontinental Title away from the Ultimate Warrior. Jimmy Snuka calls out the Honky Tonk Man for needing help from his manager and promises he will “erupt” when they face off.

Bad News Brown vs. James Sexton

Bad News attacks Sexton before the bell and stays in control. Jesse rags on Vince and tells him he needs a new car for Christmas as Bad News gets the win with a Ghetto Blaster (1:50).

Thoughts: Not much to this as the focus on commentary was Jesse making fun of Vince as Bad News continues to do nothing but destroy guys in squash matches.

An ad for the No Holds Barred PPV airs.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Conquistador #1

The Conquistador attacks Duggan from behind to start. Duggan catches him with a clothesline then hammers away. We hear from Duggan in an insert promo calling out Savage before he gets the win with the Three Point Stance (1:40).

Thoughts: Duggan destroys The Conquistador as he is still feuding with Savage.

Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 1/13/90 Boston Garden show. Duggan warns Savage he is coming after him as there will be two referees in their match. Bobby Heenan is with the Colossal Connection. Haku is growling as Heenan lets us know he is hungry as Andre said they are the best team ever put together as Heenan warns Demolition his team is hungry.

“The Model” Rick Martel w/ Slick vs. Warren Bianchi

Martel is holding a gift then gives it to Bianchi, who reluctantly accepts. Martel is then shown in an insert promo telling Brutus Beefcake he will destroy whatever is left of him after the cage match at No Holds Barred. Bianchi opens the gift and its a tie as Martel extends his hand but kicks Bianchi and chokes him out with the tie as Slick distracts the ref. Martel hits a dropkick and a backbreaker then puts Bianchi in the Boston Crab for the win (1:34). After the match, Slick distracts the ref as Martel hits Bianchi with a piledriver then puts the tie on Bianchi and laughs how its a fashion makeover.

Thoughts: Add Martel to the list of wrestlers who have a post-match gimmick. I will say this was much more effective in getting over as a heel than strutting around in clothes.

Jimmy Snuka is shown playing the WrestleMania game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Jesse gets in a dig that Snuka by saying it must be easy if he can figure it out.

Brother Love Show with guests Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake. Hogan said they are looking to permanently bust up Savage & Zeus and are glad the match is a couple of days after Christmas. Beefcake then takes about his blades and that he “trains with the steel” just like Hogan as he promises someone will get a haircut in the cage. Hogan asks Beefcake what will happen if he breaks a bone as Beefcake rambles about something then we end with the usual speech from Hogan.

Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Randy Fox & Larry Lawson

The Powers of Pain take control early as Jesse tells us that The Rockers have no chance against them. Fuji is then shown in an insert promo telling The Rockers no one embarrasses him and that the Powers of Pain will make them pay. Back to the match as Fox gets his ass kicked until Warlord holds him up as the Barbarian comes off of the top with a clothesline for the win (1:46).

Thoughts: They are pushing the Rockers vs. Powers of Pain feud.

Dusty Rhodes is now on the interview platform. He tells us that he asked Santa Claus for a new manager and welcomes us Sapphire, who is the same woman that’s been cheering him on for the past few weeks. They end by dancing together, to the enjoyment of Vince and disgust of Jesse.

Spike Jones vs. “Rugged” Ronnie Garvin

Jones lands a few clubbing forearms then puts Garvin in a bearhug but Garvin breaks out of that with a headbutt. Garvin takes control as we hear from Greg Valentine in an insert promo, irate that Garvin is allowed to wear a shinguard in the ring. Jones is now hit with the Garvin Stomp then Garvin puts on the Scorpion Death Lock, which is now called the “Hammer Jammer” (2:32).

Thoughts: Well, Garvin has now named his finisher as his feud with Valentine is now revolving around the use of shinguards.

Once again Mooney is in the Event Center for the 1/13/90 Boston Garden show. Bad News Brown tells Bret Hart he never forgot what he did to his Battle Royal trophy at WrestleMania IV. Ultimate Warrior says Bravo is scared and that he will destroy him.

Next week, the Tag Team Titles are on the line as Demolition defends against the Colossal Connection. Also in action are Rick Rude, Hercules, Dusty Rhodes, and Dino Bravo. Plus, Jake Roberts as a guest of the “Brother Love Show.” The closes with comments from the competitors of next week’s title match.

Final Thoughts:
This was mostly last-minute hype for the No Holds Barred PPV. They showed off more of the Martel character too and the rest was continuing hype for the company feuds.
