WWF Superstars of Wrestling – December 16th, 1989

December 16, 1989

From the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Roddy Piper, Dusty Rhodes, Ted DiBiase, Dino Bravo, and the Rockers. Plus, Macho King Randy Savage & Zeus as guests on the “Brother Love Show” and more!

Roddy Piper vs. Tom Stone

Stone makes fun of Piper’s kilt then gets hit with a running knee lift and tossed outside. Piper tosses Stone back inside and hammers away as we hear from Brother Love in an insert promo bragging how Rick Rude will humiliate Piper as Piper gets the win with a back suplex (0:45).

Thoughts: A quick but fun squash from Piper. His facial expression as Stone mocked his kilt was tremendous. The Rude/Piper feud heats up.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on the No Holds Barred PPV as we hear from Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake as they talk about how they will win the steel cage match.

Mark Young & Mike Shelton vs. The Bolsheviks

Zhukov attacks Young from behind to start the match. Young comes back with a pair of rollups but gets trapped in the Bolsheviks corner after that. Young uses his speed to elude the Bolsheviks then tags out but Volkoff knees Shelton in the gut then hits a suplex as we hear from The Bushwhackers in an insert promo as they yell about taking care of the Bolsheviks. Back to the match as Volkoff drops Shelton across the rope then Zhukov tags and hits a clothesline to the back of the head for the win (2:18).

Thoughts: Another TV win for The Bolsheviks as they are now in a feud with the Bushwhackers.

An ad for the No Holds Barred PPV airs.

Dusty Rhodes vs. Al Burke

Dusty beats on Burke as we see his fan cheering him on in the front row. We then hear from her in an insert promo as she was thrilled to meet Dusty, who then hits a few elbow drops for the win (1:22). After the match, Dusty invites the fan into the ring and they dance.

Thoughts: More interaction here between Dusty and his #1 fan.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Reno Riggins

DiBiase slaps Riggins around then taunts him with money but turns his back as Riggins hits a missile dropkick. He hits another dropkick as DiBiase bails then brings him back in from the apron with a flying headscissors. Riggins tries it again but is backdropped outside as DiBiase proceeds to beat the crap out of him. DiBiase slaps Riggins with his money then heads back inside where he hits a suplex. DiBiase is in an insert promo saying he will buy the publishing company that makes “WWF Magazine” and put them out of business, because they published Jake Roberts’ article, before putting Riggins away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:47).

Thoughts: Another fun TV squash match from DiBiase as his feud with Jake continues.

Rick Martel models clothes on the interview platform as Lord Alfred Hayes gives commentary.

Craig Green vs. Hercules

Hercules is quite bloated here to the point that Vince even points it out. He tosses Green down and slowly beats him down before the backbreaker submission gets the win (2:12).

Thoughts: Hercules was quite awful in the ring at this point. His physique was more bloated than anyone else on the roster.

Brother Love Show with guests Macho King Randy Savage, Queen Sherri, and Zeus. We get a lot of screaming from these three as they hype up the No Holds Barred steel cage match. Not much of a promo at all to be honest. Despite all of the hype, I’m not feeling this cage match much at all. Part of the problem is that Hogan & Beefcake already beat them so why do they need a cage match now?

The Rockers vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Dale Wolfe

Brawler elbows then clotheslines Marty before stomping away. Jannetty fights back but Brawler bites him after blocking a sunset flip. Marty comes back with a clothesline then Shawn tags and works the arm. Mr. Fuji is shown in an insert promo promising the Powers of Pain will teach them a lesson. Wolfe is in and gets beaten down until the Rockers hit a double flying fist drop for the win (3:06). After the match, Fuji comes down to the ring and challenges the Rockers to a match against the Powers of Pain. The Rockers hit a double dropkick then hit him with a double flying fist drop after that.

Thoughts: Good showing for The Rockers as they are going to be feuding with the Powers of Pain.

The Genius is playing the WrestleMania game for Nintendo and giving his own commentary.

Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart & Canadian Earthquake vs. Scott Colton

Bravo shoves Colton down as we hear from Bravo and the others warn the Ultimate Warrior of Bravo being the World’s Strongest Man. Bravo beats on Colton and overpowers him some more until he hits a side slam for the win (2:38).

Thoughts: Bravo continues to be built up as the top challenger to the Intercontinental Title.

In action next week are Jim Duggan, Rick Martel, Colossal Connection, and the Ultimate Warrior. Plus, Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake as guests on the “Brother Love Show.”

Final Thoughts: Most of this was hype for the No Holds Barred PPV but they did showcase the other feuds going on in the company. And don’t forget about more shilling of merchandise for the the Holidays.
