WWF Wrestling Challenge – November 5th, 1989

I’m recovered from surgery so going forward I’ll be back to my regular reviewing schedule.

November 5th, 1989

From the Sports Arena in Toledo, OH

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Gorilla Monsoon

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Tony Burton

Jake takes Burton down with a knee lift then works the arm. Burton dumps Jake, who comes right back in and fires away. We hear from Jake in an insert promo as he tells Ted DiBiase that he is ready for the Survivor Series as Jake works the arm. The fans chant for the DDT as Jake hits a slam then hits the clothesline before the DDT gets the win (3:37).

Thoughts: They put over the Jake/DiBiase feud here as that has been pushed strong since Jake’s return from injury.

Mr. Perfect is with The Genius on the golf course as he tells Hulk Hogan he was many ways to beat him and will maintain a perfect record and become the World Heavyweight Champion as this with Perfect swinging a golf club as The Genius smiles and even does a back flip. They really are going all out in building up Hennig as a threat to Hogan.

Bad News Brown vs. Mike Williams

Bad News fires away to start. The announcers tell us that no one wanted Bad News on their Survivor Series team because he refuses to be part of a team as Bad News stays in control until he hits the Ghetto Blaster for the win (1:51). After the match, Bad News tosses Williams to the floor.

Thoughts: I did like how they explained why Bad News was not part of the Survivor Series but he has still been spinning his wheels for most of the year.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype up the November 11th Boston Garden show. Jimmy Snuka calls out Mr. Perfect to hype up their match as Macho King Randy Savage promises Jim Duggan they will have a fight.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Bill Woods

DiBiase beats on Woods then yells at the crowd. The announcers plug the 1990 WWF Calendar as DiBiase stays in control then wins with the Million Dollar Dream (2:39).

Thoughts: Quick win as the announcers hyped up the Survivor Series.

Roddy Piper vs. Craig Brown

Brown tries a sneak attack but ends up missing a charge as Piper fires away. Rick Rude is shown in an insert promo telling Piper his team will prevail at the Survivor Series as Piper wins with a back suplex (0:50).

Thoughts: More attention to the Piper/Rude feud here.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This hyped up The Enforcers vs. The Dream Team Survivor Series match as we hear from both of the team captains.

Dale Wolfe vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart

Bravo overpowers Wolfe to start. We then hear from Bravo in an insert promo as he tells everyone, including the Ultimate Warrior, that he is the World’s Strongest Man, before putting Wolfe away with the bearhug (1:51). Bravo then refuses to release the hold after the bell and finally dumps Wolfe, who needs assistance in leaving the ring.

Thoughts: This was all about making Bravo appear as the strongest man but as usual, he did not convince anyone. No one is buying his bearhug as a deadly hold.

Gene Okerlund welcomes the Ultimate Warriors Survivor Series team to the interview platform. The Ultimate Warrior calls out Andre the Giant, The Rockers call out the Brainbusters, and Jim Neidhart does the same to Haku to hype up their match against the Heenan Family.

Survivor Series Report with Gene Okerlund.

A replay of Demolition beating The Brainbusters for the Tag Team Titles on the 11/4/89 edition of “WWF Superstars of Wrestling.”

Mooney is back in the Event Center with more hype for the 11/11 Boston Garden show. Dino Bravo calls out Jim Neidhart and says he is the World’s Strongest Man as Jake Roberts warns Ted DiBiase that he is ready for him.

Next week in action are the Powers of Pain, The Widowmaker, The Bushwhackers, and the featured match of Tito Santana vs. The Honky Tonk Man as we hear from both competitors.

Final Thoughts: Lots of Survivor Series hype here and you got to see the full Tag Team Title match in case you missed Superstars. Also, we actually get a featured match on challenge next week as the Survivor Series hype train rolls on.
