September 16, 1989
From the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, ME
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are the Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, The Rockers, The Brainbusters, and King Duggan.
The Rockers vs. Mike Williams & Barry Horowitz
Marty gets the best of Horowitz to start. The Rockers take over as we hear from the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers in an insert promo as they say the Rockers have long hair to cover their ugly faces then the Rockers get the win when Shawn hits Williams with a fist drop off of Marty’s shoulders (3:52).
Thoughts: The Rockers/Rougeaus feud continues. The Rougeaus insert promo here was tremendous by the way.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. Its on last week’s “Brother Love Show” segment where Rude attacked Roddy Piper. We then hear from Rude & Bobby Heenan as they laugh hysterically while Piper tells them they are not the first to hit him in the face and that he is coming after them.
King Duggan beats Tony Ulysses in a match shown on the 9/11/89 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”
Clip of Ronnie Garvin as guest ring announcer at SummerSlam to hype up the SummerSlam Coliseum Home Video release.
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Bobby Munice
Valentine beats on Munice as the announcers talk about his feud with Garvin. We hear from Valentine in an insert promo as he is now dedicating himself to destroying Garvin. Back to the match as Jesse was ragging on Garvin’s job as ring announcer, saying he speaks “real English” as Valentine softens up the leg then turns around his shinguard and applies the figure-four for the win (3:08).
Thoughts: The Valentine/Garvin feud continues to heat up.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 10/7 Boston Garden show. Rick Martel & Slick warn Tito Santana what will happen to him as Martel wants all three of Tito’s fans to cheer for him. The Ultimate Warrior then talks about humiliating Andre the Giant last time and will do so again.
Ultimate Warrior vs. Bob Bradley
Bradley misses a charge and spills outside. Warrior, still wearing his IC Title belt, follows out and beats on Bradley. Warrior dumps Bradley outside again then fishhooks him while screaming into the camera. We hear from Andre the Giant as he talks about choking out Warrior, who gets the win with a press slam/splash combo (2:33). After the match, Warrior dumps Bradley outside then stuffs him underneath the ring before going back inside to pose.
Thoughts: Warrior is still destroying his opponents and deposing of them after the match as they hype up his feud with Andre the Giant.
Mooney is back in the Event Center for the 9/25 Worcester Centrum show. Randy Savage & Sherri call out Brutus Beefcake & Elizabeth while King Duggan tells Ted DiBiase he will defend his crown.
Honky Tonk Man beats Mario Mancini from the 9/11/89 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”
Jim Neidhart holds up the cover of “WWF Spotlight Magazine ” with Bret Hart on the cover and tells us to buy this.
Brother Love Show with guest Jake Roberts. The fans give Jake a good reception as he comes out with Damien over his shoulders. Jake tells Brother Love Damien can hurt him and will put his life and career on the line to get DiBiase. He says his obsession is DiBiase and without the disc in his neck, he still has the DDT. Brother Love laughs and said he “had” the DDT when he was 100% but now he is no longer that as Jake said if he only has one DDT left it’s saved for DiBiase. Great promo by Jake as he is out for revenge against DiBiase.
The Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Butch Mayo & John Weiss
Jesse tells us he cannot remember a team with more technical ability than the Brainbusters as Vince jokingly replies with Tony Garea & Haystacks Calhoun. That made me laugh, especially Jesse’s response of “Who!” The Brainbusters beat on Mayo as Demolition is in an insert promo saying they are the Brainbusters worst nightmare. Heenan then distracts the ref as the Brainbusters hit Weiss with the spike piledriver (1:31). After the match, Demolition runs out as the Brainbusters eventually retreat to the back.
Thoughts: Nice to see Demolition get a little bit of revenge and run off the Brainbusters here.
Mr. Perfect vs. Jim McPherson
The Genius is shown in an insert promo saying Mr. Perfect deserves a title shot due to his Perfect record. Perfect beats on McPherson then hits a neck snap before hitting the Perfect Plex (1:43).
Thoughts: They really pushed Perfect a lot here and suggested he was deserving of a title shot. This is something to keep an eye on going forward.
Mooney plugs the 10/7 Boston Garden show in the Event Center. Honky & Jimmy Hart tell Jimmy Snuka not to mess with him then Roddy Piper then runs down Rick Rude to hype their match.
Next week in action are Koko B. Ware, Rick Martel, Ronnie Garvin, Akeem, and Roddy Piper.
Final Thoughts: Decent enough show this week. They pushed a lot of feuds here and the top TV feuds at the moment are all intriguing.
