WWF Superstars of Wrestling – September 9th, 1989

September 9, 1989

From the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Brutus Beefcake, Ted DiBiase, Demolition, Big Bossman, Powers of Pain, and Hercules. Plus, Roddy Piper as a guest on the “Brother Love Show” and more!

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Chuck Campbell

We hear from Rick Martel in an insert promo as he tells Beefcake his looks, wrestling, and strutting only rates as a “four” while rating himself a 10 in all of those categories. Beefcake takes control of the match then catches Campbell with the sleeper for the win (2:42). After the match, Beefcake gives Campbell a haircut.

Thoughts: Looks like they are starting up a Martel/Beefcake feud based off of who looks better.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. Its a replay of Andre the Giant attacking the Ultimate Warrior from behind two weeks ago on Superstars. This feud is getting lots of TV time.

The Widowmaker vs. Louie Spicolli

The Genius is shown in an insert promo talking about getting goosebumps when the Widowmaker inflicts pain onto his opponent. Widowmaker offers a handshake but kicks Spicolli in the gut instead and beats him down. Widowmaker hits a few suplexes then fishhooks Spicolli until finishing him off with a superplex (1:58).

Thoughts: More of the same from the Widowmaker, who looks to have gained some weight in the midsection since the last TV tapings.

Hillbilly Jim tells us with his horseshoe he has nothing but good luck on his side.

Demolition vs. Boris Zhukov & Jake Milliman

Before the match, Bobby Heenan & The Brainbusters are shown in an insert promo calling out Demolition for crying like losers as Heenan tosses a copy of “WWF Magazine” in disgust over the article accusing the Brainbusters of cheating. Demolition beats on Zhukov to start things off. Milliman tags and gets slammed then Smash hits him with a hotshot before the Decapitation gets the win (2:34).

Thoughts: They are still going with the Brainbusters/Demolition feud as the set up for a future rematch.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype tonight’s Boston Garden show. Rick Martel & Slick run down Brutus Beefcake to hype up their match as Martel now rates Beefcake 5/10. Ronnie Garvin tells Greg Valentine he is a “zero” mentally and that he can outlast and out think him as they will be facing off tonight.

Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Bob Allen

Bossman beats on Allen in the corner as the announcers talk about the Dusty/Bossman feud. We hear from Dusty in an insert promo as he promises to give Bossman justice with his own toys then Bossman gets the win with a sidewalk slam (1:38). After the match, Bossman cuffs Allen to the rope as Jesse speculates Allen might be guilty of impersonating a wrestler. Bossman hits Allen with a nightstick but Dusty sneaks in from behind and decks Bossman with the nightstick he stole from him last month as the crowd goes nuts. Slick comes in but Dusty chases him away as Jesse goes off on Dusty for attacking people from behind. The segment ends with Dusty dancing in the ring.

Thoughts: Another run-in from Dusty as the crowd is really behind him in this role and into the feud as well.

Mooney is now in the Event Center hyping up the 9/25 Worcester Centrum show. Ted DiBiase is with Virgil and laughs at Duggan for thinking he is a king to hype their “King’s Crown” match as DiBiase wants to win the crown just so he can humiliate Duggan. Brutus Beefcake runs down Randy Savage as Elizabeth will be in his corner in their match.

“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Jim Evans

DiBiase tells the crowd he is the Million Dollar Champion and the man who ended Jake Roberts career. DiBiase starts off by beating on Evans as Jesse tells us he has a business relationship with DiBiase. Jake is shown in an insert promo saying he came back with Damien just for DiBiase, who gets the win with his Million Dollar Dream (2:05). After the match, DiBiase stuffs a $100 bill down Evans’ throat.

Thoughts: With Jake coming back they are starting to heat up their feud through taped promos before Jake gets back on TV.

Brother Love Show with guest Roddy Piper, who comes out holding a bag. Piper is not to pleased as Brother Love makes fun of his kilt. Piper cuts Brother Love off to tell him he has a huge hair hanging out of his nose as Brother Love makes another skirt joke before calling him out for distracting Rick Rude at SummerSlam. Brother Love then calls Piper’s bag a “purse” as Piper opens it up and says its about “hygiene.” Brother Love goes on about Rick Rude and how he loves Piper, just like himself. Piper then makes fun of Brother Love’s bad breath and that he needs a hygiene lesson. Piper brings Brother Love down to his knees and flosses his teeth. Piper then squeezes toothpaste down Brother Love’s mouth and pulls him up by the hair but stops and shoves him aside when Bobby Heenan appears and demands Piper to leave Brother Love alone. Piper says Heenan also has bad breath and makes a joke about Heenan eating roadkill that Vince laughs over way too much but Heenan’s distraction allows Rick Rude to sneak up from behind a grab the mouthwash as he throws it in Piper’s eyes. Rude beats on Piper, who is selling that he is blind by swinging wildly as Jesse mocks Vince for not thinking its funny to see Rude doing this to Piper. Rude ends this by hitting the Rude Awakening on the stage then ramming the podium on top of Piper then gargles mouthwash and spits it in Piper’s eyes. A few road agents run out to break this up, including Rene Goulet, Pat Patterson, and Chief Jay Strongbow, as Jesse wants to know where they were when Piper was doing this to Brother Love. Piper then swings wildly as he cannot see as Jesse calls him out for only being able to beat up “old men.” I liked this segment and it was highly effective. It was long but Rude going after Piper makes sense seeing that Piper cost him the Intercontinental Title. Plus, the sneak attack looked great.

Hercules vs. Darryl Nickel

Nickel turns around and flexes after shoving Hercules but ends up waking into a clothesline. Hercules now flexes as the announcers talk about the Piper/Heenan & Rude feud. Hercules chops Nickel down then puts him away with the backbreaker submission (2:00).

Thoughts: Hercules has nothing at all going on for him at the moment as the announcers used this match to talk about the Brother Love segment.

Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Tom Stone & Dale Wolfe

The Barbarian knees Wolfe in the gut after brushing off several punches. Stone tags in and gets destroyed until Warlord lifts him up as Barbarian comes off the top with a clothesline for the win (2:07).

Thoughts: They are still going with the Bushwhackers vs. Powers of Pain feud.

Mooney is once again in the Event Center to hype tonight’s Boston Garden Show. We hear from Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant as they want the Ultimate Warrior to surrender the Intercontinental Title right now but this match in a non-title match as Heenan wants that title back again. The Rockers then put over their “Marathon Match” against the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. Its the same rules as a 60-minute Iron Man match.

In action next week are King Duggan, Honky Tonk Man, The Brainbusters, and the Ultimate Warrior. Plus, Jake Roberts as a guest on the “Brother Love Show.”

Final Thoughts: The Piper/Rude stuff was very good and they are building up other top TV feuds such as Warrior/Jake as well as continuing the DiBiase/Roberts stuff. They still have a direction just about two weeks removed from SummerSlam
