WWF Superstars of Wrestling – August 19th, 1989

August 19, 1989

From the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, MA

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are King Duggan, The Widowmaker, and Hillbilly Jim. Plus, comments from Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake and Zeus & Randy Savage

Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart & Rick Martel vs. Chuck Williams & Paul Van Dam

The Rougeaus try to trick Van Dam into doing kip-ups but he doesnt bite and takes Raymond down. Williams tags in but gets beaten up then put away with the Boston Crab/Knee Drop combo (3:12).

Thoughts: Quick match to put over the Rougeaus & Martel vs. Rockers & Santana six-man tag at SummerSlam.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. They show us clips of the Haku vs. Ultimate Warrior match from the 8/13 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling” as they focused on the post-match attack by Rick Rude.

Hillbilly Jim vs. Chris Duffy

Hillbilly overpowers Duffy, who calls for timeout in the corner. We then hear from The Genius in an insert promo as he believes Rick Rude will defeat the Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam then back in the ring Duffy runs into a boot as Hillbilly gets the win (2:03).

Thoughts: This was really jsut a backdrop for the announcers to talk about the Warrior/Rude match at SummerSlam as Hillbilly was being phased out

Clips of Roddy Piper from “Prime Time Wrestling” as he is spraying Heenan’s old chair and sniffing around as he smells a “weasel.” Piper was out of his mind here.

Mr. Perfect vs. Mark Reagan

Perfect beats on Reagan as we then hear him in an insert promo telling the Red Rooster about finding out why he is Mr. Perfect. Reagan comes back with a slam and a dropkick but Perfect decks him with a forearm smash and puts him away with the Perfect Plex (3:16).

Thoughts: Perfect looks strong heading into his SummerSlam match against the Red Rooster.

Hart Foundation vs. Mitch Casey & Bill Spector

Casey tries to sneak attack Neidhart after a distraction but gets backed into the corner. The Hart Foundation are then shown in an insert promo telling the Brainbusters & Heenan they will have to give them a title shot after SummerSlam. Back to the match as the Hart Foundation are in control until they put Spector away with the Hart Attack (3:14).

Thoughts: More hype for the Brainbusters vs. Hart Foundation SummerSlam match with Neidhart acting more out of control than usual.

Randy Savage, Sensational Sherri, and Zeus are shown. Sherri tells Hogan & Beefcake they must be hallucinating as Savage calls Zeus a “god.” Zeus then tells his opponents to train hard and eat their vitamins so they can pray to their new god.

King Duggan vs. Alan Kinsey

Duggan beats on Kinsey as Jesse does not believe that Duggan & Demolition can defeat Andre the Giant & Twin Towers at SummerSlam. Duggan then slams Kinsey before putting him away with the Three Point Stance (1:48).

Thoughts: Quick win for Duggan as the announcers questioned if Duggan & Demolition could overcome the size of their SummerSlam opponents.

Brother Love Show with guests Twin Towers, Slick, Andre the Giant, and Bobby Heenan. They all put themselves over while putting down their opponents at SummerSlam.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund.

The Widowmaker vs. Gary Wolfe

The Widowmaker is shown in an insert promo as he talks about getting what he wants. The announcers put over his talent as Jesse warns Hogan to take note of the Widowmaker, who hits a powerslam. Wolfe tries to fight back but is punched down then the Widowmaker hits a dropkick before hitting a superplex for the win (2:27).

Thoughts: Windham looked really good here. Its a shame he left abruptly as he could have been a player for the company.

In action next week are The Rockers, Dusty Rhodes, Brainbusters, and the Ultimate Warrior. Plus, Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake on the “Brother Love Show” and more!

Final Thoughts: More SummerSlam hype here as they also pushed the Heenan vs. Piper feud from “Prime Time Wrestling.” Other than that not much else of note took place.
