WWF Wrestling Challenge – August 6th, 1989

August 6, 1989

From the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, NY

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Gorilla Monsoon

In action this week are Hillbilly Jim, Ted DiBiase, Tito Santana, and the Brainbusters. Plus, highlights from the Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage “Saturday Night’s Main Event” match and more!

Tito Santana vs. Iron Mike Sharpe

Tito works the arm then backs Sharpe into the corner. He stays in control as Rick Martel is shown in an insert promo where he calls out Tito for hiding behind the Rockers for their SummerSlam match. Tito slingshots Sharpe back into the ring then catches a kick and hits a dropkick. Tito now works an armbar but Sharpe breaks and chokes Tito against the ropes. Tito fight back and grabs an arm wringer then fights off Sharpe again before putting him away with the flying forearm (2:58).

Thoughts: Quick match to put over Tito’s six-man tag at Summerslam.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is a repeat of the Andre the Giant and Ultimate Warrior confrontation from the 7/29/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Mark Reagan vs. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil

Virgil distracts Reagan with money as that allows DiBiase a chance to attack from behind. Reagan comes back with a pair of dropkicks and a crossbody for a nearfall but runs into a boot in the corner as DiBiase regains control. He hits Reagan with a suplex and beats him down as Jimmy Snuka is shown in an insert promo telling DiBiase he will be “bankrupt” at SummerSlam. DiBiase then hits Reagan with a powerslam before putting him away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:40). After the match, DiBiase shoves a $100 bill in Reagan’s mouth.

Thoughts: Brief match to try and hype the DiBiase vs. Snuka match at SummerSlam.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. The same promos that we heard from this past episode of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Mr. Perfect vs. Brian Johnson

Perfect toys with Johnson, who fights back with a slap. Perfect then wins a slugfest as the announcers talk about the SummerSlam main event. Perfect hits his trademark neck snap then roughs up Johnson as we hear from him in an insert promo calling out the Red Rooster to hype their SummerSlam match. Perfect drops Johnson throat-first across the top rope and shortly after that puts him away with the Perfect Plex (2:41).

Thoughts: More hype for the Perfect vs. Rooster match at SummerSlam. This one got hyped more than the other midcard matches as its clear they have plans for the Mr. Perfect character.

Highlights from the Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage match from “Saturday Nights Main Event” along with the Hogan & Beefcake interview that closed the show.

Hillbilly Jim vs. Don Champ

The Genius is shown in an insert promo talking about Randy Savage & Zeus being victorious at SummerSlam. The announcers talk about Hillbilly’s lucky horseshoe as he overpowers Champ. He biels Champ out from the corner then does a wacky dance before hitting a slam. Hillbilly toys with Champ then works him over in the corner before putting him away with a big boot (2:33).

Thoughts: Hillbilly was really brought back to the fold as a fill-in when Big John Studd departed. They were trying to get over his lucky horseshoe and still mentioned his boots and how he was trained by Hogan almost five years ago.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Sensational Sherri, Randy Savage, and Zeus to the interview platform. He asks Savage about Elizabeth likely being in the corner of Hogan & Beefcake as he does not seem bothered while Sherri promises to pour her “potion” down Elizabeth’s throat. Savage then puts over how Zeus was not even phased when getting hit with chairs.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund.

The Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Mario Mancini & Butch Mayo

The Brainbusters attack Mancini from behind and beat him down. Arn catches Mancini with a spinebuster then Mancini makes a tag as Mayo lands a few punches but puts his head down and gets elbowed. Tully tags in and hits a dropkick before knocking Mancini down and then the Brainbusters hit Mayo with the spike piledriver behind the referee’s back (3:13).

Thoughts: Another dominating TV win for the Brainbusters.

Another Event Center segment airs.

Final Thoughts: Not much of a show. Just some basic hype for the SummerSlam midcard matches and highlights from SNME and “Superstars of Wrestling” as the hype train for SummerSlam rolls on.
